As has been commented before Gary, the only way to do that is to have a secret police that whisk people away in the middle of the night, never to be seen again. We choose not to live in that kind of society. No offence Chris. but to counter your statement.... Victoria Street (Home of Scotland Yard) Horseferry Road (Both the M.O.D. buildings & the court), Heathrow, Downing Street plus many others are ALL PATROLLED BY ARMED POLICE Of course they are, they are all deemed to be prime terrorist targets. That has nothing to do with arming off duty armed forces personnel. A busy afternoon, and I have an hours drive back home yet ..... |

but they themselves seem unable to control their own extremists No one is able to control extremists, because extremists don't belong. I think the only effective control is to weld the cell door shut. Used to be we could give them shock treatments and reprogram them, but that is judged too cruel these days.

This sort of thing really makes me cross. It should have been damn obvious that in these cash strapped times, the local Council would not have spent money building a structure such as this without a good reason. If the locals had taken the trouble to find out why, they would have known. All that they seem to want to do is to behave like thicko rural peasants, with the encouragement of the media to make a good story. As an Independent Councillor he didn't even know what his own Council was doing. Time to resign. But a council spokeswoman said the kissing gate had been installed as part of a planning application to change the field's use from agricultural land to a cricket field. "The cricket club are putting up a fence to separate the cricket field from where cattle are grazing," she said. "And because there's a public footpath going through the field, a gate has been put in so the cricket club know where the fence has to go. "The club are paying for the fence and the gate so it's not costing tax payers anything." Gate 1. Now you know why Cameron doesn't trust the public to make any sensible decision over Europe, and will hold off as long as possible. 2. The general aim of the British media seems to be to undermine the British way of life, hoping for a revolution, where they can make even more money. 3. That is more worrying than any threat from Islam. Unfortunately I have to drive to Portsmouth and back this afternoon, so beer o'clock for me will be some hours away yet. :-( |

Bernie, that was a damn good post and I agree with what you have said 100%. A very sensible attitude, and well done. I think we do have the ordinary Muslims on the side of peace, but they themselves seem unable to control their own extremists. Perhaps it is time to shift the onus on dealing with this from us to them? Perhaps we should stop trying to clear up their mess for them, and insist that they do it? This actually has similar echos to the Irish situation where the Provisionals went off as a splinter movement because they didn't agree with the mainstream view. There are still rumblings behind the scenes there. Ireland |

It is correct to say that in several Eastern European countries, some middle east states, the likes of China and North Korea, this atrocity could not have happened, the authorities would have arrested him a while ago either locked up without trial or made to disappear along with any family and friends the authorities wanted out of the way. Everyone even a radical Muslim cleric is innocent until proven guilty, if that ever changes that will sound the death knell for our society. It is not an answer to say just deport all the trouble makers, it is much too late for that. 9/11, 7/7, Boston, Woolwich and countless other atrocities were all possible because we live in a democracy, freedom and the rule of law still have a tenuous hold. Part of any campaign of terror is to try and get the authorities to react, to clamp down on the perpetrators and destabilize the rule of law. Radicals WANT gangs of white English thugs attacking mosques, they WANT hate to fester it is all part of their war. It is unfortunate that we do not understand the fanaticism behind them, suicide bombers and murderers who stand in the street with blood on their hands preaching to the crowd. It is totally foreign to us, we need the ordinary Muslims on our side. Whilst that may go against some peoples principles and prejudices, until we can fully understand we will always be vulnerable. |

Okidoki, thank you for the offer. I'll be more than happy to take your money if and when it comes to it, and it won't be an open return either. In the meantime I'll at least try to do my best to ensure that it doesn't happen, rather than joining in with the professional doom and gloom merchants who are never happy unless they're moaning about something or other. Those that think the country is gong to the dogs, all those in power are corrupt and useless, lets have a revolution and put the man in the street back in charge. Down with the government and law and order. Right lads, pitchforks at the ready we're storming Downing Street this afternoon. |

In any other country this scum will be destroyed in 3 days. There is going to be a revolution, believe me. No body will care about his human rights, no courts and police will be able to stop the people. In many European countries where there are secret police and oppressive regimes, that sort of thing is likely to happen Which is why everybody wants to leave and live over here with our democracy and freedom. What this person seems to be predicting is civil unrest, rioting, and people taking the law into their own hands. Once a society descends to that level, you'll end up living in ghettos controlled by drug barons. A fantastic comment on the article from a foreigner & has to be the No 1 post of the 21st century It is nothing of the sort. That sort of inflammatory talk from the origianl writer is almost encouraging people to go out and do it, and the sooner the better. People with a leaning towards that view are going to be lumped in with the BNP and EDL and similar hard line organisations, and many of their advocates are already on "the "names noted" lists. The day that the balloon goes up, if it ever does, they'll be the first to be taken off the streets. At present there are far too many people trying to whip up national hatred against Islam and Muslims, if they want another Holy war, they might get it. I will have nothing to do whatsoever with that type of viewpoint, and I agree with Bernie, it is the price we pay for our chosen lifestyle. The day that I consider that the price we pay is too high, I shall pack my bags and go and live somewhere else, and I wish a few others would do the same. |

Is this country mad? A fantastic comment on the article from a foreigner & has to be the No 1 post of the 21st century & we've still got another 87 years to go & I can't see it getting knocked off pole position! "I am a foreigner, from Eastern Europe and I will tell you something.I and all foreigners could not believe our eyes how naive are you Brits. In any other country this scum will be destroyed in 3 days.If what happened to this poor solder happens in any other country, there is going to be a revolution, believe me. No body will care about his human rights,no courts and police will be able to stop the people. How you allow this rubbish man to walk free is beyond me.And to pay him so much money in benefits,so he can have more free time to go and preach and plan with his scumbags friends how to destroy your country. OMG will you ever wake up.You will have huge problems in this country.Just wait till they become majority and start electing there own mayors, police commisioners ect..The process is the same like in Kosovo 20-30 years ago,and we all know happened there. But the people of Kosovo are Europeans, and never mentioned to introduce the sharia law. What I think will happen here is very scary jorjiboy , London, United Kingdom, 25/5/2013 02:39" Think MasterCard ought to pinch it for their advertising as it's absolutely PRICELESS A possible Brit 9/11 nipped in the bud? Disgraceful! I have 6 sisters & had I been that murderous scumbag, I known for certain that all of them would be horrified & tearful..... .....really does make one wonder sometimes! |

MI5 "Offered job to suspect" A comment from another article raises a highly interesting point: - "one of the suspects was under surveillance for 8 years? No one wastes resources like that, there had to be a reason as to why it was continued for that long" Think its time we got that "Untouchables" division with the authority to investigate all authorities should the need arise! |

Confirm that there is no lag here either. No offence Chris. but to counter your statement.... Victoria Street (Home of Scotland Yard) Horseferry Road (Both the M.O.D. buildings & the court), Heathrow, Downing Street plus many others are ALL PATROLLED BY ARMED POLICE Where's the difference by having all active forces personnel armed 18/7 (at least most days they do sleep for 6 hours - not all, but most)? Edit: Going to let this one go to 750 posts before starting a new one, if that's ok. This was on a Military Rifle Range in the UK. We had finished firing & had to wait an hour or two for transport back to home base. You'll see no weapons in our hands or lying around. They had to be cleaned & then stored in the armoury until transport arrived. Skill at Arms was constantly drilled into us so often it became second nature, but even then we were still drilled - that's how much the armed forces care about weapon handling - truly professional!. |

Confirm that there is no lag here either. The Armed forces are more than annoyed, they are damn angry, and I can't blame them. They might have to consider arming troops 24/7, I hope that isn't the way forward, but if it has to be then so be it. Getting too late to continue this. Another day. |

No lag experienced here. Of course the Armed Forces are annoyed. They put their lives on the line every time they get posted to a combat zone. To experience what happened on Wednesday in your own country is pathetic when all they can see is the Baghdad Broadcasting Company & their colleagues giving air time to a scumbag. On active service? Then Arm them 24/7. This B/S about civilians is just that B/S. Our armed forces personnel are Trained Professionals & if the civvies don't like that then..... T/S !!!! |

"Yesterday Mr Stewart, a former Army colonel, said the time had come to tear up human rights laws and deport extremists deemed to be a threat to the public. I don't know who this Mr. Stewart is, but as a past Army Colonel he ought to know better than to speak from anger rather than practical commonsense. We are at the present time, like it or not, Internationally legally bound to the ECHR and our own UK laws. We can't just tear them up, as much as emotion might want us to do so. He said the security services should go through the estimated 3,000 terror suspects they are monitoring and take immediate action against any deemed to be a threat. Correct, yes we should, and I'm quite sure that is happening right now. Whilst in principle I agree, how do you deport someone to a country that will not accept them. Correct and a succinct point. It is unfortunately the price we pay for a democracy. Correct again. At the moment 48 hours after this terrible incident, peoples emotions are still raw, and no one more so that the armed services themselves, as they realise that one of their own has lost his life in an horrific way, and that it could have been any one of them. But, we have to calm down and not run around like headless chickens, and deal with this properly. That is not being helped by the newspapers and the TV giving such graphic accounts and images of what happened. Yes of course the public have a right to know what went on, but is such gruesome detail that is usually reserved for coroners inquests, really necessary? Not nice reading for the victims family. As he is an ex serving member of the armed forces I can understand Sirius's strong feelings about all of this, but Bernie speaks sense. In a free country like the UK, people can say almost what they like in public. The police can only arrest them if they are causing a breach of the peace, a public disturbance, a public affray, or inciting people to riot. But there must be a case now for insisting that these hate preachers be confined to speaking within Mosques and not on a public street. We can't stop their vitriol in private but it will reduce the public exposure to it. Of course they will claim religious persecution, you would expect them to, but I am sure that there are anti-terrorism laws that can be brought to bear. I have no quarrel with Islam per se, just the extremists bit of it, and thankfully that view is shared by the Muslim Council and the vast majority of Muslims as well. Once these extremists realise that they are outcasts amongst their own people, that will be a step forward. In the meantime let everyone be extra vigilant and grieve sensibly. |
