With no modern technology as we have today, it's truly amazing that our security services were 1st class during 1939 - 1945 with most spies either turned or hanged. I wonder if this helped a little. Enigma was for more than just submarines. Public perception in Britain at that time was that the country was full of well trained German spies who were deeply integrated into society. There was widespread, as Churchill put it, "spy-mania". The truth was that between September and November 1940 less than twenty five agents arrived in the country; mostly of Eastern European extraction, badly trained and poorly motivated. Also helps being an island. |

A was mentioned the "D notice" is of little use if something happens in a public area. Modern phones are capable of recording acceptable video as we have seen. The modern world now sees events in almost real time, look at the Boston bombing. I was speaking to a friend about this recently. When I was young, you had the story, but in newspapers and TV you had to wait for pictures and even longer for film reports as they had to get a film crew to the scene, now anyone with a phone is a film crew. Is this instant "in your face media" a good thing? Possibly a discussion for another thread. |

I'm not posting the link as I won't give credence to the scumbags..... ...Hey BBC, ITV & Channel 4, you need to heed this man's words: - "Yesterday Mr Stewart, a former Army colonel, said the time had come to tear up human rights laws and deport extremists deemed to be a threat to the public. He said Labour’s Human Rights Act, which enshrines the European Convention on Human Rights, should be scrapped immediately to allow the authorities to take tougher action against terror suspects and those who encourage them. Mr Stewart called on Home Secretary Theresa May to begin the process immediately by deporting hate preacher Abu Qatada to his native Jordan, where he faces terrorism charges. He said the security services should go through the estimated 3,000 terror suspects they are monitoring and take immediate action against any deemed to be a threat. Mr Stewart, a former commander of UN forces in Bosnia during the Balkans conflict, added: ‘It may not be as democratic as libertarians would like but, I am sorry, we are fighting a war.’" Statement was in reply to the airtime given to a scumbag we did manage to kick out! |

Whilst in principle I agree, how do you deport someone to a country that will not accept them. Like it or not we signed up to the human rights laws and as such no country has to just accept anyone we no longer want. If that was to start innocent people who the government just didn't like could be deported. It is unfortunately the price we pay for a democracy. Now I would support more surveillance, on these people, 24 hour if necessary, I have no problem with my taxes being spent to LEGALLY kick these people out, or lock them up. Anything else would erode OUR freedoms. |

For those we cannot deport because they're home grown: - Simple enough answer..... ..return prisons to what they were originally intended - no more TV, Libraries, snooker etc etc. Stuff the BHL's, stick them in maximum security. If the BHL's don't like that, then I suggest they go to Drummer Rigby's family & say it to their face! I'll say it again - those scumbags gave up their civil/human rights by their actions... NUFF SAID! |

Whilst in principle I agree, how do you deport someone to a country that will not accept them. Sorry Glenn doing that makes us no better than them. A better solution is a maximum security cell, no phones/internet/tv - just feed them - no daylight either just give them their allocated 1 hour walk at nightime..... ...you never know, 5 years into a 25 year sentence, they might do us a favour & top themselves. & then do what they did in the olden days - throw the body into a limepit! |

No lag experienced here. Of course the Armed Forces are annoyed. They put their lives on the line every time they get posted to a combat zone. To experience what happened on Wednesday in your own country is pathetic when all they can see is the Baghdad Broadcasting Company & their colleagues giving air time to a scumbag. On active service? Then Arm them 24/7. This B/S about civilians is just that B/S. Our armed forces personnel are Trained Professionals & if the civvies don't like that then..... T/S !!!! |

Confirm that there is no lag here either. No offence Chris. but to counter your statement.... Victoria Street (Home of Scotland Yard) Horseferry Road (Both the M.O.D. buildings & the court), Heathrow, Downing Street plus many others are ALL PATROLLED BY ARMED POLICE Where's the difference by having all active forces personnel armed 18/7 (at least most days they do sleep for 6 hours - not all, but most)? Edit: Going to let this one go to 750 posts before starting a new one, if that's ok. This was on a Military Rifle Range in the UK. We had finished firing & had to wait an hour or two for transport back to home base. You'll see no weapons in our hands or lying around. They had to be cleaned & then stored in the armoury until transport arrived. Skill at Arms was constantly drilled into us so often it became second nature, but even then we were still drilled - that's how much the armed forces care about weapon handling - truly professional!. |

MI5 "Offered job to suspect" A comment from another article raises a highly interesting point: - "one of the suspects was under surveillance for 8 years? No one wastes resources like that, there had to be a reason as to why it was continued for that long" Think its time we got that "Untouchables" division with the authority to investigate all authorities should the need arise! |

Is this country mad? A fantastic comment on the article from a foreigner & has to be the No 1 post of the 21st century & we've still got another 87 years to go & I can't see it getting knocked off pole position! "I am a foreigner, from Eastern Europe and I will tell you something.I and all foreigners could not believe our eyes how naive are you Brits. In any other country this scum will be destroyed in 3 days.If what happened to this poor solder happens in any other country, there is going to be a revolution, believe me. No body will care about his human rights,no courts and police will be able to stop the people. How you allow this rubbish man to walk free is beyond me.And to pay him so much money in benefits,so he can have more free time to go and preach and plan with his scumbags friends how to destroy your country. OMG will you ever wake up.You will have huge problems in this country.Just wait till they become majority and start electing there own mayors, police commisioners ect..The process is the same like in Kosovo 20-30 years ago,and we all know happened there. But the people of Kosovo are Europeans, and never mentioned to introduce the sharia law. What I think will happen here is very scary jorjiboy , London, United Kingdom, 25/5/2013 02:39" Think MasterCard ought to pinch it for their advertising as it's absolutely PRICELESS A possible Brit 9/11 nipped in the bud? Disgraceful! I have 6 sisters & had I been that murderous scumbag, I known for certain that all of them would be horrified & tearful..... .....really does make one wonder sometimes! |

It is correct to say that in several Eastern European countries, some middle east states, the likes of China and North Korea, this atrocity could not have happened, the authorities would have arrested him a while ago either locked up without trial or made to disappear along with any family and friends the authorities wanted out of the way. Everyone even a radical Muslim cleric is innocent until proven guilty, if that ever changes that will sound the death knell for our society. It is not an answer to say just deport all the trouble makers, it is much too late for that. 9/11, 7/7, Boston, Woolwich and countless other atrocities were all possible because we live in a democracy, freedom and the rule of law still have a tenuous hold. Part of any campaign of terror is to try and get the authorities to react, to clamp down on the perpetrators and destabilize the rule of law. Radicals WANT gangs of white English thugs attacking mosques, they WANT hate to fester it is all part of their war. It is unfortunate that we do not understand the fanaticism behind them, suicide bombers and murderers who stand in the street with blood on their hands preaching to the crowd. It is totally foreign to us, we need the ordinary Muslims on our side. Whilst that may go against some peoples principles and prejudices, until we can fully understand we will always be vulnerable. |
