Well at the moment I am gobsmacked that with all the problems with the NHS all the parties are just paying lip service to those issues with the exception of one dedicated MP & god forbid, he's a Lib-Dem.

Be aware of the agenda where they underfund and cripple the NHS so they can claim it doesn't work and privatise it.

Hospitals and doctors will also milk it for all they can by performing every procedure and test they can.

My father had a living will that stated no extraordinary measures were to be used to keep him alive; he was 87 years old. In the last week of his life he was flown by helicopter from a rehabilitation facility to a hospitals where he was kept alive for several days at a cost of over $150,000.

This has been a long running thread and if I posted this before, I apologise. Four years ago I had a life threatening car accident. I was already on SSD but still had 4 months to go before I was eligible for medicare, so I had no health insurance and not enough car insurance. The young man who hit me had the bare minimum required by law in Florida which was a joke. So the medical system did the minimum required by law to treat me and tried at the first opportunity to send me on my way well before I had recovered sufficiently to go home alone.

Now, four years later, I might have to go into the hospital to treat a leg infection that has returned from the time right after my release four years ago. It may be a resurgence of the same infection or a new one in the same location. My doctor says that if the second round of oral antibiotics I am taking doesn't kill the infection I may have to be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics. This time around now that I have medicare and one of the best supplements provided through AARP I am afraid they will do their best to keep me in managed care once I am admitted.

I have had a little exposure to this with other family members. They will attempt to get you out of the hospital as soon as you no longer need the care they provide. If you are unable to return home, the options will be a nursing home where you can received the additional medical help you would require or you might need an extended care home. They need someone's permission to take this path. It's best to get it from the patient but in the current case we are dealing with, the patient had to give up the power of attorney to us 10 years ago so we had to make the decision. They could also go before a Judge but if you have a clear mind, you would be the one who makes the decision,

If you can't return home, should be able to select from several locations. Ask to see where you will be going and make sure you will be happy there before deciding. Lack of money may limit your options but most of the extended care facilities are nice places and offer many services that may make you more mobile than you currently are.

As you have a clear mind, keep asking question until you get the answers or the solution you want.

I am a non smoker, non drinkers so I can only report what others have told me. It's the Nicotine they are after. Nicotine initially provide a cheap, more or less legal high. Because Nicotine is also very addictive, it's not long before they can't live without it. The young far to often don't trust others and have to learn the hard way and smoking is definitely learning the hard way.

Really hope that 2nd lot of antibiotics work and keep you out of hospital Bob! I don't know enough about the medical and care system in America, but it seems wrong to me that you could be forced into managed care if it's something you do not want. Keep us posted!! :)

Forbidden Fruit. Prohibition (alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana) never really works.
