Hey everyone, I am very new here so thanks for the help in advance. When I look at my account settings under my computer, my GPU isn't showing up.

I have an Asus G73 laptop with ati radeon 5870 mobility, the drivers are up to date and in my computer it is installed and working properly. Just wondered, being very new to this, if the computing power would be leaps and bounds from just running it on my cpu. Everything seems to be running fine, just wanted to let the machine crunch as much as it's capable of without melting it down lol.

So take a look if you will, and steer me in the right direction.
Thanks again - BD

the drivers are up to date

But where from? If updated by Windows Update, then these drivers lack the necessary driver component that will activate the GPU.

For Nvidia, this is the CUDA and OpenCL part.
For AMD and Intel this is the OpenCL part.

This component can only be installed by using drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
In the case of an Nvidia GPU, start at http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
In the case of an AMD GPU, start at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
In the case of an Intel GPU, start at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?iid=gg_support-EN_01+home_downloadctr (Choose Graphics, Desktop graphics drivers, 3rd Generation Intel Core HD Graphics 4000/2500)

No, in BOINC Manager. Copy the first 20 to 30 lines from the Event Log, which is found under CTRL+SHIFT+E.

OK I think this is what we were looking for. Although I updated my drivers again from radeon and it now does show the gpu correctly. Does the program auto use the gpu if available, and is is significantly faster?

Sorry - got this computer for some gaming, but am still learning by trial and error about the hardware, software and interface beyond just gaming and browsing. Thanks for the teachings :)

Yes, and yes. If you haven't changed your preferences, the GPU will be used when the computer is idle. You have gotten a lot of OpenCL work for the GPU, so just keep an eye on things.

Calculations done on the GPU will be done a lot faster than on the CPU. Minutes versus hours.

So it should automatically use the gpu when available if I am correct, however now the seti screensaver is working and I dont think it should be from what i have gathered, if the gpu is crunching.

I havent changed any of the settings, i checked and all gpu related are checked by default still.

Before I updated the drivers, the seti screensaver never worked it only stated it was loading. And would surfing the web be enough cpu activity to stop gpu crunching? Again all the settings are still default. I am going to learn about this - especially with the help you have offered already. Its like a dual education, seti@home as well as cpu 101. Thanks -BD
