Holy crap!!

My Boinc client is reporting download speeds of upwards of 700KBps (that's right, KBps)!!

I hope this is indicative of our future experience with the colo bandwidth!

Amazing performance for xfer rates!

If this is what we can expect from the Colo for transfer speeds in the future, and not just a dialed up speed for post-move recovery, it might be a good idea to consider how to kick up the research a notch or three because we won't be losing impatient folks any longer, I don't think, and chances are good that a lot of folks might start trickling back. Not only that, but I don't see many machines with idle GPU's or CPU's in the future - provided you can split the data fast enough!

The campus Data Center is a hardened facility that provides a precision environment for the housing of mission-critical servers and related equipment. The facility is connected to the campus backbone network via two separate 10-Gigabit trunks for high availability. Customers are provided rack space in lockable cabinets with dual power connections, backup UPS, remote management access for servers, hardware installation assistance, and staffed Data Center Operations Desk.

Two lines above the paragraph you quoted, IST say

I imagine that by rack-unit they mean the 1U, 2U, 3U etc. by which the height of servers and other electronic equipment is measured: a standard full-height rack cabinet is 42U, so I'm assuming $420 per rack per month ($10 wouldn't cover the electricity bill alone for a fully-loaded cabinet). The recently-donated servers are much more compact than their predecessors, and with better remote access they probably don't need to waste space on that monitor shown in the 'old closet' photographs: they may have been able to squeeze everything they need into one rack.

And I'd also imagine that the IST accountants will want their pound of flesh at full tariff rates. Whether that has to be found additionally to SETI's existing budget, or whether something creative has been done to subsidise it, I have no way of knowing. There'll be a huge saving in electricity and air-conditioning costs at the SSL available to offset it, and from what I've been told about the noise levels generated by the SETI servers, the other staff in the SSL might well have had a whip-round to hasten their departure. :)

The (admittedly large) 'compute cluster closet' at where I used to work has a big yellow notice on the door insisting that ear defenders must be worn before entering. An hour in there still leaves your ears ringing...

It looks like IST also provides SAN, NAS, & iSCSI services. So that may be an option in the future so they don't have to deal with managing their storage equipment.

Yes, I missed that figure Richard, thanks for pointing it out. This move must obviously have been costed out in advance and found to be affordable, as well as beneficial. Having had a brief look at the map, it most certainly doesn't seem to be a 5 minute trot down the hill from Gauss Way to Hearst Avenue. It looks like it's either round the houses via Centennial Drive, or cross country via Cyclotron Road :-0

But Eric, Matt, Jeff etc are meant to be project scientists not server technicians, so this should free them up to concentrate more on the main project objectives. It's all looking good so far.

With modern remote access tools they should only really need to actually have "hands on" when installing or repairing hardware. Power and cooling problems should be a thing of the past! Did anyone notice IST has it's own diesel generator!

I would just like to send a bunch of kitty high fives to all who made this work.

I have been crunching Seti for a long time now, and I cannot remember a time when things looked so good.
I know, the moment I say that, Murphy is gonna have his say about things.......

But really. I don't know who first came up with the colo idea. But it has come to fruition now, and at the moment things could not look better for the project.

And I suspect that even with increased comms, with the bandwidth available now, this might be even easier on the servers, what with not having to deal with the tangled mess of retries and botched comms.

Upward and onward goes the Seti search.

I'm surprised they don't have a gas turbine power plant to provide emergency power.

Of course, that would be a BIT noisy even at idle.
