Sounds good, something that I'd hope will be alright and hopefully won't require any new parts to be made.

It will have to get new flues, of course, but that's minor and to be expected.

Well it could be worse, it could be one of the surviving Allegheny locomotives, the C&O 2-6-6-6 version, My favorite and probably pound for pound the one with the most horse power in steam or diesel currently...

Nobody's even talking about restoring a 2-6-6-6 that I'm aware of.

261 will be hitting the road in a couple months for the first time in four years. 765 is doing nicely, although in my opinion it seems like NS is treating it as an ugly stepsister while 630 gets most of the attention. UP is making noise about doing a Big Boy. And then there's this promising little idea. The latest from them is that they would need to raise enough money not only for the restoration but also to build a shop to do it in and maintain her once it's done.

No, I doubt anyone is, it would probably need a new boiler among other parts... It's just My favorite locomotive.

I will be winning once I take a shower and go out in this beautiful sunshine! Already 37F, heading for mid-40s.

Very pretty Chris, Here's a C&O H8 2-6-6-6 Allegheny by contrast...

Though I've read the 1601 is in better shape...

Now now young man. The American Big Boys are fantastic locomotives, there is no doubt about that, But I will defend the Scotsman against anyone, with no quarter given or asked.

A Big Boy loco is a mere 4-8-8-4 that was made by Alco, a 2-6-6-6 H8 was made by Lima Locomotive Works. The H8 is the most powerful steam locomotive ever built, at 7500hp...

A Big Boy 4-8-8-4 Locomotive.
