Yes hopefully this move will be a big success and fix the problem with all those stock Windows systems out there that have just be allocated or grabbed 100 or 200 workunits and due to the comms problem just havn't ever got the work or can't get it so that they can return it. Cheers. |

Let Einstein have a burst. Just put it on NNT after one work request. there is a post on einstein about the setting of zero not working and giving out more work then requested. |

If I remember correctly the original announcement about the possibility of making this move, it would allow for more bandwidth for downloads (I could be wrong). Well actually it looked more like a "hope"!! Maybe we'll also get more bandwidth (that's a big maybe) |

Does this mean you can take full advantage of the gigabit connection? |

Does this mean you can take full advantage of the gigabit connection? This was Matt's post on the subject 49 days ago......... "For clarity: the possible, easier upgrade in bandwidth might be a nice side effect when moving to the colo, not the main reason for moving to colo. Also, weekly outages entirely happen remotely, i.e. I sit at my desk instead of standing in the closet. That is except if I'm moving servers around, replacing drives, etc. In preparation for all this Jeff and I have been keeping track how often we need to go into the closet for reasons that wouldn't be taken care of by the colo. We're looking at once a week, tops. Probably more like once a month. Oh yeah part of the deal is if we keep a stash of hard drives down there, they could do drive swaps for us as well." Note the use of the word 'might'... The access to more bandwidth is not a given. We'll just have to wait for further news from Matt, or see what happens after they move the servers to their new home. So, in preparation for the work and to prevent an onslaught of completed units trying to upload at the same time when you all come back up on the 3rd/4th, are transfers already being deferred / backed off? The reason I'm asking is because I'm out of units to process, there are 6 downloads pending and all are in "project back-off" status with the countdown at 3 hours and dropping. I was hoping with the work this weekend that units would stockpile (like normal) and would be able to still be processing... but it'd make sense so we don't crash anything on re-start. Thanks! |

Nothing is being deferred by the project. You are having downloading difficulties, and that causes the backoffs. This sounds like good news. Hope it results in improvements for all parties. |

Any chance of removing download limits before the outage so as we can build up a sizeable cache of work to perhaps keep us crunching for the project during the outage, like in the old days ? |

I'd still be interested to know whether it's a 5 minute walk down the hill, or a 15 minute car ride. Not that it makes any real difference. just idle curiosity. A five minute skateboard ride down, a fifteen minute walk back up? |

Which would result in all the fast crunchers trying to upload and download 3 days of work when the project comes back online. Sounds like the last thing anyone wants!! Personally I will be running down my cache next week so all my machines have finished all work before the first. I will only restart when the "rush" is over. |

I'm not going to do anything, just let it happen. I expect to get a nice bump in my Einstein stats. I'm with you in that... Make sure to get my cache empty and all uploaded and reported , Then start back up after the system stabilizes . I'll just have to take some other form of nerve control to combat this addiction to seti@home till then.... ;-) ![]() |
