Hi all. I'm from Denmark, and our pricing on elektricity is properly the most expensive in the world. 0,352 US$/KWh. The hardware overhere is also expensive, but the powerbill is just as high a faktor to incalc when you get new hardware. I wish there was a easy way on this site to quiqly see what produkt/GPU/CPU i could get the most numbercrunching per $ spent on elektricity. maby there is such a website allready, in that case, please post it here in this post - Thanks in adv. regards Kim. |

I cannot speak to power-efficient GPUs, since that seems to be mutually-exclusive. However, the Xeon E5-2600 family of CPUs are excellent number crunchers, and several models in this family are very power efficient-- especially given the higher number of cores/threads provided. For example: http://ark.intel.com/products/64584/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2660-20M-Cache-2_20-GHz-8_00-GTs-Intel-QPI The Xeon E5-2660 delivers 8 cores (16 threads) and can sustain a turbo clock rate of 3GHz using a maximum of 95W. That chip can crunch massive amounts of data across 16 threads using just 95 watts of power-- amazing! In contrast, there are Core i7 CPUs out there with 12 threads that consume 150W at somewhat higher base clocks, with the TDP shooting up even higher as those unlocked chips are overclocked... If you just want to look at 4-core CPUs, I would suggest an Intel Ivy CPU like the Core i7-3770T or the Xeon E3-1265. You could also look at reducing the voltages, power = Volts^2. I find that most cpu's will run perfectly ok with the core volts reduced. Core2 cpu's will run at 1.1V rather than the default 1.35V. |

Hi all. The most efficient GPU with SETI@Home would seem to be the GTX 690. It draws a lot of power but it does a lot of work per watt, too. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7990-devil13-7970-x2,3329-12.html The card is not miserly, but it is the most efficient. Feeding it will cost you a fortune and it will do a wealth of work per dollar. In general the further up the spec tree you go the better the crunching/watt gets, but the capital/crunch curve is not so straight forward, often being biased to something in the middle of the tree. As the OP says, in Denmark the capital cost is relatively high for various reasons, so they have to consider that as well as the running costs. For example, in the UK a gtx660 is less than half the price of a GTX690, but it will crunch slightly more than half that of a GTX690 (in units per hour), but if you want to run an "ultimate" cruncher you have to go to the GTX690 because you can put more of them into a given space. (roll on the next two in my big cruncher - I'll probably need a chiller to the list as its going to get "rather warm" in the office with that lot at full chat this summer) At the end of the day it boils down to "How much do you want to pay, both in terms of capital and running, for your hobby?", and only the individual concerned can answer that question - we can of course give guidance on what the costs will be. Thise are proplerly impressive chips, but surely the pricetags on the components are aswell. I'll settle with my current hardware witch is a i7 860@2,8 GHz and a HD5850 gfx card. Due to the fact that my powerbill is "impressive" allready, I would like to only use the HD5850 card. I have been away for a while, and I found a old exe file of lunatics software. I installed it setting it up so only the gfx card is usable. currently I'm only reciving about thise 2000 points per day, I havent had a watt0meter on my computer, but i dont think it draw that much power. The GFX card is not that hot, and it's very quiet. Ergo, the 5850 is not blowing away on crunching numbers. It has only one tread running btw. If I want to use my corrent sustem, and not to use the CPU "Becos it cant calc that much compared to the gfx-card when you say performance/watt" How do I only use GPU, and not the CPU, In the end, my bedst way to contribute to the projekt is properly by donating money, so those that run a private "datacluster" can do what they do bedst. |

5850 is around 140 watts. If you run only AstroPusle application and if properly configured, it can bring you around 30K RAC per day. Its very good performance per watt ratio. |
