Message 1344141 - Posted: 8 Mar 2013, 19:26:16 UTC - in response to Message 1344128.

Now to go see if this can be tweaked on Linux...

We think Linux has it enabled by default, but an actual observation would be interesting.

See here.
tcp_window_scaling (Boolean; default: enabled; since Linux 2.2)
Enable RFC 1323 TCP window scaling.

[server01] /home/ireid > cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
1
[server01] /home/ireid > cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem
4096 16384 4194304

tcp_timestamps (Boolean; default: enabled; since Linux 2.2)
              Enable RFC 1323 TCP timestamps.

[server01] /home/ireid > cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
1

So, it looks like they are set by default (this is my most veteran Linux box, I keep it in sync with the OS we use at CERN which is basically RHEL5).

I just wanted to point out that the download site does not mention Win8.....I tried it on my Win8 computer and it does not work there.

According to Speedguide.net Forums (TCP Optimizer): It doesn't yet work for Win8 :(

Does anyone have Win8, and a spirit of adventure enough to try one of the other deployment mechanisms? Does Win8 have regedit? Or a command prompt?

Seems to work fine on my Win8 Pro machine with v3.08, if you need me to test anything let me know what

Again, please - what works fine? What did you do?

Ill try some regediting on win 8 if you want as tcp optimizer definitely doesnt work. It does have regedit and command prompt (although i think command prompt has been stripped of a lot of useful things if i remember correctly). Might been babystepping on what to input in reg edit though as it has been a loooong while

Guys sounds like a lot of people have dedicated systms for running seti tasks. However I use my everyday desktop to run tasks, and do day to day stuff. After I made this change to TCP1323 my downloads from all other website seem to be affected. My downloads begin at a normal pace compared to what I am use to with my ISP but after 2 or three minutes my download drops from 1.2MB per second to 23k/per second. Has anyone seen this as a side affect in making the change to fix the SETI downlaod problem?

I have not noticed any negative side effects so far on my daily driver/browser.
In fact, youtube clips seem to be caching very well with 1323 active.

Message 1344144 - Posted: 8 Mar 2013, 19:33:54 UTC

I am running windows 7 x64 I originally set TCP1323 to 3 that fixed the SETI WU download issue but cause the dell web site to go really slow. I was downloading a single video driver file that was 181megs, started off fast got 10% into it and dropped dramatically.

I just changed my TCP1323 to 1 and my dell download completed in about 2 min.

checking my SETI downloads I appear to be downloading at 4.7KBps which is slower than when I had it set to 3 I was getting 10KBps I have been watching the WU while i've been typing this and even though it said it was downloading it just stopped and moved onto the next WU. So setting this to 1 didn't help the SETI WU issue for me.

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters you need to change Tcp123Opts to the value 3, or add it if its not already there.

Followed the instructions in the OP, nothing more
All settings were saved correctly and applied, and remained after several reboots. Reg settings were definitely updated confirmed with an reg export pre and post running the optimizer

Mkay. The Tcp123Opts isnt actually there, does it need to be added as a new DWORD?

Might been babystepping on what to input in reg edit though as it has been a loooong while

You could try pasting this into a text file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
"Tcp1323Opts"=dword:00000003

Give the file a .reg extension, and run it as administrator. That would work on Win7.

Alternatively, you should be able to expand the tree view in regedit by following that line. When you reach all the way down to 'parameters', look for "Tcp1323Opts" in the right-hand pane, and tell us what you find.

If the value is there, tell us what it was, and change it to 3

If there's no value, create a new REG_DWORD, name Tcp1323Opts, value 3

In Win8 it's in a slightly different place
On my machine it's in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP] then you should find the Tcp1323Opts options

You DID reboot after the change, yes?
I don't believe the change will work on the fly.
Just checking.

Yeah, I'm seeing the same kinds of results - better than before but not as good as Win7 or XP, but it has finally allowed me to hit the 200 limit
Seems to pick up and save the correct reg entries for Win8 and is persistent, so not sure why they say it doesn't work with Win8

Since adding the value to my win7 registry, I have since rebooted, and I was able to download 2 APs today without a proxy and they went to completion.

As for slowing other things down.. I have not observed this. In fact, I downloaded an Ubuntu ISO just a few minutes ago and it took about 5 seconds to ramp up to 4.2 MiB/s and stayed there until completion.

Downloaded a 720p youtube video and it, too, took a few seconds to ramp up, but ran at 4.2 MiB/s until completion. However, I was able to download like that before, except now AP downloads don't time-out and stall.

Seems like a win-win.

I did it to my XP Pro 64bit install with no problems using Richard's command line.

How did you attempt the change?

Okay, here's the latest. Started with 110 AP downloads this morning at 11:27 and just finished with a total of 180 tasks, including 70 MB at 16:01 local. AP tasks averaged 20 min per file, while MB took approx. 45 sec to 1 min. Have disabled the refresh task, which immediately declared me as a job destroyer instead of a job creator. AP tasks went from an average of 3+ hrs with retries and network toggling to 20 min, incredible. Don't know what to do with the extra time on my hands!
