It has swapped names with a nearby mountain.

Another hint:

Where the sidewalk ends.

OK, the name of the mountain in the background of the photo. (not the little corner of the mountain the photographer is standing on).

What am I missing, I see no sidewalk.

When I saw the clue, I thought he was referring to the book, but when I looked up the link for you I discovered there's also a movie. So I don't know which he means or how it helps. (I bet it's the book.)

OK, the clue was a bit obtuse, but, where does the side walk end? Try to think logically.

On my 1; 12 500 000 map of Australia I find only three peaks in the Australian Alps. Kosciuszko, which I already mentioned, Bimberi, mentioned by Julie, and Bogong. But they don't resemble the European Alps, contrarily to the New Zealand Alps. They are more similar to the Apennines.

In that case, my map is wrong. I thought it was in the Australian alps, but it is not one of those, so it may merely be nearby.

It is close to one of the peaks mentioned though.

Was it ever?

Perhaps before the Europeans came?

I know since they left everything has been a big mess.

Ob Question: Is that salt water?
