Well Windows 8x will not get the old start menu back, ...
8.1 has a better start menu than 7. It is more geek oriented. PC are now for geeks, mobile is for the great unwashed.

Times change can M$ change with it?

Ah, so you're either a geek or unwashed then? :-)

It was one of yours who coined "great unwashed" when referring to common people; I'm just trying to be like you people. Mobile is fast becoming common, more than PCs. M$ is not common on mobile devises. That is M$s big problem and it isn't getting any better.

The "great unwashed" doesn't care about Windows because they use Android or Apple.

Once you get used to win8 and the especially the Win8.1, it's not that much a difference with 7.

On the surface but behind what one sees it is much more secure. It becomes part of the UEFI (BIOS).

Unfortunately, the way that "UEFI" is being used does nothing to secure against the common exploitation vectors that Windows continues to harbor and suffer.

So sorry, as far as I can see the UEFI offers no useful 'extra' protection in any way for Windows.

A "volte-face" around the figure 8?

New leaked 'Windows 8 screenshot': The Start Menu strikes back

A purportedly leaked screenshot of what appears to be an upcoming version of Windows has given us a closer look at the much-rumored new "hybrid" Start Menu, suggesting it may be coming sooner, rather than later...

... Microsoft "will be making this available to all Windows 8.1 users as an update." But the new screenshot, originally posted to the My Digital Life forums, seems to indicate that the change may not be far off...

Do YOU work at MICROSOFT? Are you SURE?

What is being described as the "biggest round of job cuts" to hit software mammoth Microsoft since 2009 is on its way...

Meanwhile, suffering some of the latest of Win8-update or whatever new name gets Marketed next... I am still dismayed at the amount of intrusive nagging and Marketing the thing shoves IN-YER-FACE whilst trying to do any task. That makes other operating systems look positively serene and Zen-like in comparison!

Microsoft continues to 'borrow' to try to play catch-up for what has long been done elsewhere...?

Windows systems set to be merged by Microsoft

Microsoft has revealed work is under way to unify its different Windows operating systems into a single OS...

"We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes,"...

"During the quarter, we reassessed our product roadmap and decided not to ship a new form factor that was under development,"...

... designing the new unified Windows system to run on x86 processors, rather than trying to make a version for ARM-based chips, would make it simpler to create. Such a move would play to the favour of chip manufacturers Intel and AMD at the expense of [others]...

... the benefits of merging the Windows Phone OS with the other versions of the system, noting that it would swell the number of programs available to run on the firm's handsets as a result of having "one ecosystem"...

The move puts Microsoft at odds with Apple and Google, which are both pursuing separate strategies for laptop/desktop computers and mobile devices - Apple with Mac OS X and iOS, Google with Chrome and Android.

But it does bring Microsoft closer to another OS developer, Canonical, which has promoted the idea of its Ubuntu [Linux] system powering both phones and desktops. Canonical previously highlighted that one benefit of this strategy was that a handset could double up as a low-power desktop PC if it was plugged into a monitor and connected to a mouse...

... "Microsoft has had a real problem trying to educate the market about the differences between the different platforms its been running,"...

So... All too bewildering even for the massive Microsoft Marketing machine?

Note that Linux has had the same one kernel for all systems since the very beginning. You have a choice for how the system looks and behaves by merely bolting on a choice of OS features and any choice of desktop. Works very well. You have a choice...

If this is anything to go by, don't expect Windows 9 to be much of an improvement...

Windows set to be "unified" - in other words, one size fits all

I anyone else having trouble running Seti on Windows 8/8.1?

Mine is running slower than its baby brothers hardware (a C-60) on the GPU portion. It was taking some 8 hours to do a seti type (not astropulse) task. And the C-60 was taking 6 some hours. The C-60 gpu runs at 400mhz, the A-10 gpu runs at 800mhz and often the C-60 is completing before the A-10. Something is screwy.

Is this the best Pi Microsoft can make?

Pre-Order Microsoft's Sharks Cove Developer Board

Microsoft’s Michael Fourre announced ... the company’s answer to the Raspberry Pi, the Sharks Cove developer board, ... preorder for $299...

One very apt comment:

hannibal , July 29, 2014 12:20 PM

If this is Raspberry Pi alternative, then the price is quite steep... about 10 times...

Is this where the only way is a Marketing trip downwards?...

Microsoft blasts sueball at Samsung in Android patent royalty spat

... The two companies sealed their licensing deal in 2011, back in the days when Microsoft was threatening to sue all and sundry over patents covering aspects of Android smartphones.

Redmond has since inked similar deals with dozens of Android device vendors, all without revealing any dollar amounts or even which patents it's actually asserting – although it says it has around 200 that apply.

But if Samsung was a licensing cash cow for Microsoft for a couple of years, the software giant says those royalty payments began drying up once the companies' business relationship took a dramatic turn in 2013...

Windows Registry-infecting malware has no files, survives reboots

Antivirus doesn't stand a chance becuase there's nothing for it to scan

... code reaches machines through a malicious Microsoft Word document before creating a hidden encoded autostart registry key, ... It then creates and executes shellcode and a payload Windows binary.

"All activities are stored in the registry. No file is ever created,"... "So, attackers are able to circumvent classic anti-malware file scan techniques with such an approach and are able to carry out any desired action when they reach the innermost layer of [a machine] even after a system re-boot...

... Windows Regedit cannot read or open the non-ASCII key entry. ...

The non-ASCII trick is a tool Microsoft uses to hide its source code from being copied, but the feature was later cracked...

... "This trick prevents a lot of tools from processing this malicious entry at all and it could generate a lot of trouble for incident response teams during the analysis. The mechanism can be used to start any program on the infected system and this makes it very powerful,"...

Windows 8 market share stalls, XP at record low

Another month of nasty numbers for Microsoft

... While the two traffic-counters come up with different numbers, the trend lines are very similar.

That Windows XP has fallen below 25 per cent of the market on Netmarketshare's count, and holds just 15.15 per cent of the market according to StatCounter, is good news for all as it means fewer compromised-immune-system boxes are out there to use as platforms to attack the rest of us.

Yet both surveys show that Windows 8 has failed to launch, with its two versions failing to get to even half of Windows 7's market share.

Whatever Satya Nadella says about OneWindows, unified apps, or productivity being Microsoft's great strength, the fact remains that its most recent major launch failed to capture the planet's imagination...

Microsoft KILLS Windows 8.1 Update 2 and Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has at last revealed the date when its second major update to Windows 8.1 will ship to customers: never...

... That's right, it's "Patch Tuesday" no more. As surely as if those two words were never spoken, LeBlanc has changed the name of Microsoft's monthly dump of security fixes to "Update Tuesday," meaning we can expect new features to show up along with our critical patches from now on...

Ouch!

So... All "bugs" are now in Microsoft-speak called "features"?!...

So... The Microsoft way is that you must forever always "update" regardless of whether you want new ways imposed upon you?...

What happened to "positive innovation" for the users?

What I see as Mafia-style extortion by leveraging the threat of patents litigation is more profitable than real world device innovation?

What happened to the rallying cry of Developers DEVELOPERS Developers to fortunately make the Microsoft fortunes?

Are people really so resistant to change?

Or is it that they just don't like what they see in the new offerings?...

To my eyes, indeed it does look like people are not liking what they see:

Clock ticking for Surface as Microsoft preps for gen-3 globo-launch

Losses hit $1.7bn since launch, sales a drop in tablet ocean

Given the losses Microsoft has racked up with the Surface "design point", the firm could be forgiven for drawing a line under the project rather than sending a third generation product to Britain.

In a blog post, Microsoft this week confirmed the Pro 3 model will hit the streets in 25 countries including the UK on 28 August...

... The newest Surface will have to leap off the shelves into the arms of more consumer faster than previous versions to turn a profit and carve out a market for Windows slabs, he added.

“So far it’s [Surface] not profitable or making the market, so something has to change for Microsoft to justify continued investment, especially since there’s a strategic cost...

Microsoft throws old versions of Internet Explorer

Come 2016, if you're not up to date you're on your own – enjoy your security bugs

... giving you just shy of 18 months to get up to date...

... As of today, that means IE9 on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2, IE10 on Windows Server 2012, and IE11 on any later version of Windows (including Windows Server 2012 R2). In fact, the only reason IE9 is still being supported on Vista is because no later versions will run on that little-loved OS...

... Microsoft is a late convert to web-standards religion, having spent the better part of 20 years releasing browsers that rendered sites in ways that were incompatible with rivals like Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.

These days, the software giant markets standards compliance as a key feature of IE11...

... Redmond even seems to want to atone for its own past bad behavior. It's now encouraging commercial customers who have built their bespoke web apps for older, patently terrible versions of IE to upgrade to IE11 and use its "Enterprise Mode" to maintain backward compatibility...

Is that throwing out of the old IE support a sensible move for better maintenance or merely a cynical Marketing push of people onto newer platforms regardless of cost?...

Or will the expense show people the light of other better ways?...

MS is loosing money because win8 sucks big time,Plus nobody wants to give up an an apple or android phone.
So let me ask you a direct question. Do you think that MS having financial problems will enhance Linux distrobution? I really doubt it myself.

I doubt so myself also.

However... I think that should MS lose favour or otherwise lose some of what I consider to be their more nefarious lock-in, then the IT world could see a tsunami dam-burst of change.
