(Note for those who are not so antiquated: Electric trams and buses many years ago used a 'trolly' to pick up power from overhead lines. The trolly jumping or falling off rewarded errant drivers with no power...)

You have a choice of many different window managers and desktops for Linux systems. You even have available the look and feel of Windows whilst running Linux if you really wanted. Such is the unfettered non-dongled non-strangled freedom of choice. It's all in the "GUI" (Graphical User Interface);

Android (Bionic/Linux) has pretty much taken over the world of smartphones (just hope that Google doesn't become emboldened to enslave us);

And until rather recently, all the then variants of Windows used the same code for the TCP/IP stack (used for the network/internet) as developed by BSD Unix developers. The author of that code had to abandon his email address due to the phenomenal amount of spam from malware-ridden Windows systems including that email address in their scavenged victims lists. The email address was given to offer helpful support as was commonly done by code authors of the day.

Actually wondering if anyone was going to talk about Windows having a *nix kernal in it. AFIK it doesn't. It may have hooks in it to support *nix like apps, but isn't it still http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS under the hood, and we know that was a steal of CP/M. Aren't there still a few DOS apps out there?

I doubt they took a *nix and wrote hooks to make DOS run, but perhaps they did in one of their revision cycles.

In any case it is bloatware. Needs to have all the legacy crap sliced out, all the stuff that was for single user / single app at a time O/S. In today's world, that is the security hole as a single user / single app box didn't need security instead relying on physical security.

Thank the Maker; I'm saved (accredited to C3-P0). I still have a PC that runs DOS 6.2, Win 3.1 and Win 95, plays CDs, DVDs and old games. Why on Earth would I need some newer, more power hungry, drive sapping OS, when what is there, does the job it was supposed to do? Each to their own.

If you showed someone who had only ever used Windows XP Windows 7 it would only take them a few moments to get into it.

Windows 8 is progress, pity the human condition hates progress.

I use Windows 8 every day on my laptop it is BETTER than Win 7 but different!!

Over fifteen years of development and we have IT and home computing stereo-typed as being a farcical mess and users EXPECT things not to work and to be expensive, or so obscure as to be something no less than voodoo magic...

And as for the continuous security scares and continuing anti-virus/anti-malware fiasco...

Now that Steve Jobs is gone from Apple even they have had a missstep. Take their app for maps as an example.

I have no problem using a touch screeen on my smart phone or when I use the wifes tablet. But whe im at home sitting more than an arms length from my computer screen Ill be darned if im going to touch the stupid screen everytime I want to do something. The freaking mouse works just fine.

It way past time for the CEO's and board of directors to to tell the bean counters to go pound it.

Im sure MS is only doing what they are doing because the consumer is voting with the pocketbook.

I still find it weird that people think Win 8 ONLY works with touch screen and not a mouse or you have to make a choice!

IT DOES BOTH! Why when sitting at home more than an arms length from the screen would you want a touch screen? You wouldn't! Just use the mouse, it will work fine. Why when sitting on a train with a tablet would you want to use a keyboard and mouse, you wouldn't, just touch the screen! Have you ever tried to use Win7 on a touch screen? I have, I own a Win 7 tablet, it's not fun.

I hate the fact that MS has a monopoly and can charge what it likes but what I see and hear is mostly anti MS hype, people WANT to see MS fail, in many ways I really hope it does. Then finally LINUX can take it's proper place as the worlds premier operating system, well that's what I'm told
