I have SETI and GPUGrid for projects. When selecting the "computing preferences" in each project, yields two different titles under the "Network usage" section. SETI reports as: "Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least (max 10 days)." while GPUGrid reports: "Computer is connected to the Internet about every Leave blank or 0 if always connected. " both will affect the same parameter but, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. I am having trouble configuring my client for GPU usage and debugging it becomes obscure when the 2 projects I am involved give different meanings to the same parameter. |

They don't mean the same thing. "Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least (max 10 days)." Means how much work you have in hand to cover periods when the project is not contactable, this is commonly referred to as your cache. "Computer is connected to the Internet about every Leave blank or 0 if always connected." Means how frequently the computer contacts the project to report completed work and get new work. Currently the optimum cache appears to be between three and four days, with the frequency set to between 0.01 and 0.1 Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The first message is the newer one, meant for BOINC clients of version 7 and up. The older second wording is for clients of versions 6 and earlier. Gruß, Gundolf |

both will affect the same parameter but, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. They mean the same thing: BOINC will expect your "Computer is connected to the Internet about every" X days so it will try to download enough work to "Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least" X days  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

both will affect the same parameter but, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. I hate to differ but, "Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least ..." does not mean "Computer is connected to the Internet about every ... " or viceversa. That they were intended to affect the same BOINC behaviour is an entirely different subject. As Gundolf put that correctly, the wording used on the 2 BOINC versions is different. They do not imply one another (a newcommer in BOINC configuration cannot conclude the same thing when reading the 2 sentences). |

both will affect the same parameter but, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. The older one is poor wording, and is misleading. This was brought to the attention of the developers several times before it was changed. What actually happens under the covers has not changed much. 1) Enough work is maintained to (hopefully) cover this time period. 2) Work is scheduled such that it is completed at least this much in advance of the report deadline so that it will have a likely connection to be reported before deadline.
