Message 1323457 - Posted: 2 Jan 2013, 3:53:19 UTC - in response to Message 1323429.

I have 24 completed tasks ready to submit back to SETI and the servers won't accept a connection. This has been a problem for me for about 24 hours. I obviously can't get additional new tasks to process either... Any Thoughts?

Regard,

Ken

Duh, Seti has a problem, quite normal, accept it as it is part of science on a shoe string budget. If you want to help fix it donate money and you will get a green star also.

This obviously means that we'll be unable to Upload Completed Tasks. So, when the Servers come back online, we'll have Numerous Completed Tasks 'Ready To Report'. Because of the excessive PC's attempting to Connect to The Servers and an obviously larger than normal number of Tasks to be Downloaded by The Servers, is there any liklihood of Problems?
I'm just wondering because I have worked in a Large Establishment with about 1,000 Data Processing Computers connected to One Server, and The Server Often Went Offline, and when It came back Online, only a certain number of computers could Reconnect at once: So this took quite a considerable amount of time. If too many tried to reconnect simultaneously, the Server would Crash Again.

Every January I crunch Malaria for a passed Setizen. It is just as worthwhile as Seti, and in fact we are more likely to find a cure for Malaria than find ET! WCG is also a good crunch looking for cancer cures. Seti will be back it always is, but use the away time constructively :-)

It's a Wonderful tribute that you are doing for The Fellow Setizen.

I have 2 Computers (This One - HP Notebook) which I am only using for SETI, due to it only having 2GB RAM, and if I try to use to many things at once, it Slows Down and Freezes, or Crashes. My other PC (ACER Desktop) is Running numerous BOINC Projects. Like you, I am running a couple of Medical Research Related Ones (such as Rosetta@home) which Benefit Research for things like Altzheimers and similar Diseases (due to having a Family Member, and Relatives suffering from such or similar).
It's good to know that we can assist in the Research for such things. Hopefully, one day, our Efforts may come to Fruition in some way.

(The following Paragraph is not meant to be Critical in any way)
Also, what a lot of people don't realise, is that even Astronomical/Space Related Research, including SETI, may help in General Medical Research on Earth. Even though we may never find ET LIFE in the next *1,000 years or so (*example only), we may achieve Results from Such Research that could Benefit the Future Of Mankind.

It would seem I am not the only one able to update. I keep getting deffered for 3 hours. No uploads and no Downloads. Started yetserday when I would normally expect the servers to be off for weekly server down time.

I wish people would stop bitching about no work units being available over the maintenance period. Without volunteers and volunteer or corporate funding the project would not exist. The volunteers at the centre do a great job and are to be commended for their dedication. We all know we have to maintain servers and equipment to progress and as SETI@Home is such a huge project the servers and equipment need lots of constant attention.

Well done all..

You can easily see that the servers have gone kaput, and the problem is not on your end.
If the Seti forums are up and running, you can also check the Number Crunching 'Panic Mode' thread for additional input.

I am not sure if this is related, but I have not been able to upload my completed work since Monday at 11:59. My Project has been saying "Communication Deferred" with the timer set at multiple hours. This is the same with both SETI@Home and SETI@Home Beta Test. Is this related to the scheduled outage or is it an unscheduled outage? Please keep us informed, so we can keep on crunching! To all SETIzens, Happy New Year and lets keep a crunching!

There was an unscheduled outage, but uploads continued fine throughout; just reporting, downloads, and the status page were affected. You may have a problem at your end.

This forum is for news from the project admins. There is the Number Crunching forum for questions about the project. That is where you can find out information from other users about what is going on.

when you see The Message 'Communication deferred' ... (on The Projects tab) ... if you Click on the Tasks tab after a short time, you will sometimes see that your Completed Work has actually been uploaaded. However, it will still be Counting down on The Projects Tab on theat coumn which says Deferred. It's not Necessarily Related to The Issue Of The Servers.
