'John' is a slang term for a toilet in the UK, don't know about other countries. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

'John' is a slang term for a toilet in the UK, don't know about other countries. Here too. "Henceforth, all toilets shall be known as Johns!" - King Richard, as portrayed by Sir Patrick Stewart in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Question for you British types: Patrick wasn't a Sir yet when he did that movie. Is it still proper to call him Sir when referring to it?) David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

The correct manner of address for a knight of the realm is "Sir", even when looking at his past works. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The correct manner of address for a knight of the realm is "Sir", even when looking at his past works. Ah hah. Knight Bachelor. "It is possible to be a Knight Bachelor and a junior member of an order of chivalry without being a knight of that order; this situation has become rather common, especially among those recognised for achievements in entertainment. For instance, Sir Elton John, Sir Bruce Forsyth, Sir Tom Stoppard, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Christopher Lee are Commanders of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), Sir Terry Pratchett and Sir Patrick Stewart Officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Sir Paul McCartney is a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). None of them would be entitled to the honorific "Sir" by virtue of their Order of the British Empire honours. However, all are also Knights Bachelor and thus each may preface their name with that title." I didn't realize he had been knighted so recently (2010). The correct manner of address for a knight of the realm is "Sir", even when looking at his past works. He's a gay and somewhat effeminate man, but he's still a man. If he started calling himself Ellie and using the personal pronoun she, then she'd be a Dame. "There is no female counterpart [to Knight Bachelor]; a woman deserving an honour of this rank is appointed a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) instead." Dame Judy Dench, for example. "Dench was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1970 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1988." Wow, much earlier than Stewart. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Are timing lights still useful for modern cars? Wouldn't have thought so, as the s/ware adjusts the timing with calculations based on temps, throttle position et al. |

Are timing lights still useful for modern cars? I kind of thought so. I opened the hood on my 2nd loaner today to see what it's got. I couldn't tell under all the plastic. It's damn clean, though, which I guess you can expect from a car with 745 miles on it. I also discovered yesterday that it has a backup camera. I like that. Otoh, I can't get the seat to recline. Are timing lights still useful for modern cars? No. Most modern cars have a sensor for that. The on board computer reads the sensor and sets the timing from that. Magnet on the flywheel and a pickup. |

I drank a lot of free beer helping people who had timing lights but did not know how to use them in my Air Force days. |
