Seti just won too. Had this scatcher laying around here for the last week and decided to finally play it. Won $10 bucks.
Since I was reading this thread, I donated it, before I could spend it.

The point I am trying to drive home here is that the project's success need not depend upon a few folks with deep pockets.
It can come from a large number of us responding and making a very modest gift to the project.

I realize there are some in other countries that have trouble with the banking systems. Or folks that don't have credit cards. But they are a rather small percentage of those involved here.

I just want folks to think about this in the terms of the fundraiser title.

Who among us can really say they cannot afford 84 cents a month to give to this project if they truly believe in it?
I suspect darn few.

For most, I think it's just admitting that fact and taking a few minutes out of their day to get the deed done.

Click on my star, folks. The kitties shall lead the way.

Meow!

For just pennies a day you can feed a SETI@Home staff member.

Perhaps they should implement a star ratting system. Sort of like the eBay one I imagine. With different colored stars to show how much has been donated. This might entice people to donate more to get their preferred color of star. Perhaps an option that doesn't indicated an amount for those that like to show they have donated, but don't wish to indicate how much.

My preferred star color is transparent/anonymous.

I would strongly oppose a "star rating system".

I am no longer working full time and have to be a bit more careful with money, because I can only afford a smaller amount. It would not worry me but others who are on lower income or retired should not be "discriminated against" with a "lower value" star.

I would probably donate anonymously or stop altogether.

Bernie, as Ang has posted, the different coloured stars are in the works. I would like to see the green one as a default, as I don't have a lot of extra money either.
But I do volunteer work and I get paid zip. Still a nonvalue contribution to Seti.
That said, some of the big donors should have bragging rights, if they choose too. Or just opt out, as some do.

That was kind of what I was thinking. Let those that wish to brag do so & then they can compete with each other or such to get they brightest & shiniest star.

Personally I keep away from those stars all together.
