If a horse whipping is needed, it seems politicians should be the first to be on the receiving end.

Isn't the problem that they are Catholic? Seems to me like the Pope, bishops and cardinals need the horse whipping. Oh wait, they enjoy it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagellation
Some members of strict monastic orders, and some members of the lay organization Opus Dei, practice mild self-flagellation using an instrument called a "discipline", a cattail whip usually made of knotted cords, which is flung over the shoulders repeatedly during private prayer.[13] Pope John Paul II took the discipline regularly.[14]

Yes, and the church leaders too:

[...]
Full Statement by the Standing Committee of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference on the equal and inalienable right to life of a mother and her unborn child:
[...]
* The Catholic Church has never taught that the life of a child in the womb should be preferred to that of a mother. By virtue of their common humanity a mother and her unborn baby are both sacred with an equal right to life.

* Where a seriously ill pregnant woman needs medical treatment which may put the life of her baby at risk, such treatments are ethically permissible provided every effort has been made to save the life of both the mother and her baby.

and if they'd stopped there, maybe doctors in Ireland would feel they had Church support to save a pregnant woman's life under circumstances similar to those of Savita's. They didn't:

* Whereas abortion is the direct and intentional destruction of an unborn baby and is gravely immoral in all circumstances, this is different from medical treatments which do not directly and intentionally seek to end the life of the unborn baby. Current law and medical guidelines in Ireland allow nurses and doctors in Irish hospitals to apply this vital distinction in practice while upholding the equal right to life of both a mother and her unborn baby.

"gravely immoral in all circumstances" wonderful. As for the law, this case from 1992 suggests that current law in Ireland includes "the right of Irish women to an abortion if a pregnant woman's life was at risk because of pregnancy"; 20 years later and the politicians are saying they won't be rushed into legislation.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Politics isn't meant to be fun Sirius it's a serious business. It causes wars where people die, it affects the money in your pocket, it changes the laws in the country you live in. I have thought for a long time that we ought to have a "Private Eye" type thread here where your particular style of lampooning and irreverence would be best suited. That will leave the other threads for more serious discussion.

I'll give you the honour of starting it off. As you think it's all going down the pan, how about the "Westminster Chronicles" or WC for short.

(OMG was that was almost satirical!)

That's surprising coming from you WK.

Why, I usually use unlinked clues from other peoples posts to further my own knowledge. Either to get more and sometimes better information to backup or oppose their claims.

Our friend who is taking a holiday, always, without exception, leaves things so wide open, so that with only a little searching, one can bring up many other sources to oppose his views, quite often from the same person. Unfortunately he has a tendency to lose it, so that we have weeks to wait until the fun can begin again.

@Gary

It's got nothing to do with what religion a country is, it's all down to the laws of the land & those are made by it's parliament.

It was quite obvious that Éamon de Valera, a long time Taoiseach, wouldn't scratch his nose without permission from the Catholic church.

Tablets? I thought they were issued by muppets sitting at a round table......

Only if they include the word "Fatwa"

What ever happend to the oath. Do no harm. How the heck can you let a woman die when there was never hope for the child?

A horse whipping should be on order.

Fear of repercussions impair a doctor's ability to perform actions in accord with their oath:

In 1992, Ireland’s Supreme Court ruled that abortion should be allowed if the mother’s life was in danger but the law has never been changed, forcing thousands of women to travel abroad for terminations every year.

Enda Kenny, the Taoiseach, came under renewed pressure to legislate for abortion earlier this week, but said he would await the results of reviews into Mrs Halappanavar’s death by the hospital and by the Health Service Executive.

Rachel Donnelly, a spokeswoman for the Galway Pro-Choice campaign group, said the case highlighted the need for legal change.

"This was an obstetric emergency which should have been dealt with in a routine manner,” she said. “Yet Irish doctors are restrained from making obvious medical decisions by a fear of potentially severe consequences.”

Clare Murphy, director of external affairs at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, added: “Anti-abortion activists in Ireland have long said that sick pregnant women in Ireland get all the care they need – we know not just from this appalling case but from our own experience at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service that this is not the case.

“This case must force the Irish government to act on the judgment from the European Court of Human Rights on implementing existing rights to abortion in Ireland. This judgment was reached two years ago,” said Ms Murphy. “The absolute travesty is that nothing has been done sooner to prevent cases like the one we have just seen.”

Those that have trouble with your claims have no need to disprove it should they wish to dismiss it.

Of course they don't! I'm not taking it too seriously. I hope you aren't :-)

Totally off topic, feel free to move it elsewhere.

Fallen angel is a concept that is typically synonymous with a wicked or rebellious angel. As the actual term fallen angel is not found in either the Hebrew Bible or the Deuterocanonical Books or the New Testament, biblical commentators use this term to describe angels who sinned or angels cast down to the earth from the "War in Heaven"

A "war in heaven" is an expression used in the Book of Revelation in reference to a combat it recounts between angels led respectively by the archangel Michael and by "the dragon", identified with "the devil and Satan", who is defeated and thrown down to the earth.

During the last ET visitation, beings apparently flying like birds were called various grades of angels. It is believed by some that at the end of that visitation, there was some sort of mutiny upon the orbiting mothership. Chief Angel Michael was the captain, and Satan was the rebel ringleader. The rogue band of crewmen having been beaten, either jumped ship, or were effectively deported by being left behind.

Of course I can't prove it, nor can anyone disprove it!
