Message 1304910 - Posted: 11 Nov 2012, 14:00:52 UTC - in response to Message 1304876.

How long have the Italians been using tomatoes in their cooking?

That started around 1492, but didn't really get going until the 18th Century according to the wiki at least...

He's right on that one. Potatoes, tomatoes and think corn too. had a very slow starting but look at them today.
Look at how many kinds of potatoes their are now. almost 500 kinds of tomatoes, and how many selects of corn and all started with a boat ride.

The consumer is getting more and more picky as well.

I like the white corn most but the tomatoes I dislike them cutting them so green. No flavor at all. I grow my own.

I heard and I don't know if this is totally true or not but the great potato famine started with some potatoes from Mexico with something wrong with them. Maybe Mayans revenge. :o (that was a thrown in)

Their was one man that had a radiator shop in I think NC or SC claimed he grew 420 different kinds of tomatoes.

Corn (maize) is a new world plant. The native Americans of New Mexico had a diet that consisted of corn, beans, squash, and hunted meat (mostly deer). Other native Americans had somewhat different diets. One tribe that I read about in California had learned how to treat acorns so that they were edible. Acorns are really not good for you long term, however, soaking acorn meal leaches the chemicals that are not good for you out.

Corn was a staple throughout the Americas North of the equatorial Rain Forest and south of the someplace in Canada. It was first cultivated someplace in Mexico from Teosinte. (Yes this is from memory. I took a few anthropology courses as electives in college).

I didn't mention that, so I have no idea what you're mumbling about...

Apparently also in Florida and NJ.

Although it has been successfully transplanted and grown in many locales around the world, it is found natively only in North and South Carolina in the United States, specifically within a 60-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina. One such place is North Carolina's Green Swamp. There also appears to be a naturalized population of Venus Flytraps in northern Florida as well as populations in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

I had one once but it didn't live that long.

Then I don't feel so bad. Air plants were another touchy one too.

I'm thinking about African food. I don't think we have any restaurants over here with African food. African shops we have, but they hardly sell any food there...

We do not have one in Stockton, but they do in Sacramento. When I was twelve going on thirteen, I visited Tunisia. The accomodations were Stone Huts and dinner was Couscous and some type of meat. That was a true finger food meal.

Couscous is a Maghrebian dish of semolina traditionally served with a meat or vegetable stew spooned over it. Couscous is a staple food throughout Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya. Couscous was elected as the third favorite dish of French people in 2011 in a study by TNS Sofres for magazine Vie Pratique Gourmand.

I'm sure, I like it too. I have had it in many ways but it's a good standby when your feeding the kids. (well that was 45 years ago now) :) I had a lot of fun with a wok and made a lot in the back yard because it was a flame thrower. LOL

Mac and Cheese or chili Mac were both a big hit with my kids. I myself still like it.

I must say my kids like a lot of stuff, especially my youngest. They don't like spicy and Mexican food though.
