Second PM sent just now.

Still downloading WU's and not processing any of them.

Any German speaking persons here? User is from Germany and My German is... eins zwei drei etc :)

This host is just doing nothing else but downloading WU's...

Is there any way to stop this kind of hosts receiving new WU's???

Still going...

IMHO, BOINC server code should prevent these kind of hosts. But it doesn't.

Last two posts seem like impressive demonstrations of systemic flaws/vulnerabilities/exploits. Any Ideas on how to replicate those feats ?

Message 1793508 - Posted: 4 Jun 2016, 22:28:32 UTC - in response to Message 1768653.

I might as well "report myself" as my computer ID: 7819651 will make a lot of errors the next couple of months as a couple of hundred jobs will time out.

The reason for this is the installation of Lunatics applications on the computer february 7th 2016. I never would have thought that installing applications would mean that the jobs in queue was just deleted - my bad, I'm sorry for not reading everything thorough.

Anyway - I've looked for a way to abandon the tasks, so my Wingmen wouldn't have to wait for the time-out, but in vain. If someone could make a button on the "All tasks for computer xxxxxxxx" making it possible to abort tasks no longer in Boinc-manager it would be apreciated.

So now you all know what happens when a blonde girl begin to experiment with getting a better throughput. ;o)

. . A button to run a "waiting WU list comparison" between the SETI database and the hosts's cache would be a useful thing. Any WU's in the SETI database that are not cached on the host could then be either resent or returned to the workpool. That could be a choice given after the comparison was complete. Of course I do not have to do the program writing to make it happen :).

Host 7374749

This one should be reported to Dr. Korpela(?) The owner may have developed code that locks all the GUPPI work unit files so that they error out but allows the non-GUPPIs to complete normally (or maybe doing it manually ie by deleting them, just trying to avoid the "Aborted".)

In progress (871) · Validation pending (1670) · Validation inconclusive (87) · Valid (861) · Invalid (0) · Error (925)

All of those 925 error units appear to be GPU GUPPI work with the same -5 Can't Open File. Also shows as "Anonymous" indicating the owner has hidden their computers.

From the same machine:

SETI@home v8 (anonymous platform, NVIDIA GPU)
Number of tasks completed	100133
Max tasks per day 1094
Number of tasks today 390
Consecutive valid tasks 1064
Average processing rate 78.26 GFLOPS
Average turnaround time 0.46 days

He/she has plenty of recent valid Arecibo tasks, so BOINC isn't going to prevent the wastage through quota control - please mention that in your report to Dr. Korpela.

It is also worth pointing out that this user is reporting an unusually high Tasks In Progress (860, on a system with 4 GPUs...)

Host 7374749

I've written jointly to Dr Anderson and Dr Korpela about this host, which is currently at #3 in the Top Hosts list.

I included Dr Anderson, because some of the temptations leading to this sort of behaviour arise from the BOINC platform design, at least as much as from SETI's use of it.

Excellent and thanks; may carry more weight from a developer. This thread has numerous examples of the same, including a few posts down (Cody Johnson?) with >32K tasks In Progress.

Another candidate for teh Hall of Infamy:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7954707

Yes mraswyp, we are talking about your computer:

State: All (5328)
In progress (127)
Validation pending (1794)
Validation inconclusive (2125)
Valid (42)
Invalid (1115)
Error (125)

Application: All (5328) · AstroPulse v7 (2) · SETI@home v7 (0) · SETI@home v8 (5326)

Given that most, if not all the invalids and errors are from the GPU....

I'm soon into a period With a lot of timed out tasks on one of my hosts.
The host http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7968069 suffered a problem With Windows TDR(Timeout Detection and Recovery) after driver Upgrade.

(The GPU started a task, ran it for a short time, then crashed and recovered. Then the card started a New task, and crashed again. This corrupted a lot of ongoing tasks, and i ended up With deataching from the Project to clean out the "broken" tasks when the TDR problem was solved. I could have finished the bad tasks but they would be invalid as the task was already broken as soon as the GPU failed them the first time.)

Understood, and sympathies - thanks for letting us know.

If it happens again, or if anybody else reads here - it might be helpful to attempt to abort and report the tasks (set 'no new tasks', obviously) before detaching - that way they are released for somebody else to take over more quickly than waiting for the timeout.
