This is very welcome news, thank you for posting it.

You're welcome.

An uncle of mine who passed away in 1984 served on the Artic Convoys & I've seen his records. He was torpedoed 3 times on the Murmansk runs with the 3rd time being severly injured.

I could never get him to talk about that time until one particular day while I was home on leave.

He said the same thing - "We had a job that needed doing, nothing more" Being a military history buff, that statement said it all about that generation.

Sorry Nick, publicity stunt or not, they deserve those medals!

Sirius' uncle is like so many of those that served in Bomber Command, and on the Arctic Convoys. They did things we consider "beyond the pale", they did so without comment or complaint, "because they had a job to do". I am so glad they did that job, and I am proud to honour them.

Sorry Nick, publicity stunt or not, they deserve those medals!

Yes they did deserve the medals, I haven't stated anything to the contrary.
http://www.north-star-news.co.uk/News/Medals-at-last-for-Arctic-Convoy-veterans-26022013.htm
But as can be ascertained from the news article above this rewarding of medals
was neither a military not government lead initiative but one totally lead by
the veterans themselves. What does this really mean in relation to the military's
or governments stance here? On the governments side then not a lot, not until
someone realised that this could make a good publicity stunt to boost the
flagging popularity of an ailing Prime Minister. To this end I'd rather have
seen either the Queen or Prince Philip award these medals; them who went through
the war so will readily appreciate then what these men really went through.
Mind you, Cameron may have carried this all out as a way of sticking his
fingers up to some of those in Europe who hate to be reminded about the war
years??? If so, then lets see more of this standing up to Europe
from him in the near future; then I might forgive him.

Sirius, I wonder if your uncle and mine ever shared the same convoys at any
time during that war. My uncle too was sunk three times and fortunately for
him he surved in each case. I remember an occasion many years ago when he
mentioned about being sunk three times. He was also a gunner on the merchant
ships and I asked him what was it like to be sunk. He said that, " One minute
you were firing the gun at an aircraft then suddenly you just found yourself
in the water...just like that...then you realised that the ship had been hit"

You never can tell & I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. To get the Merchant Marine to open up about their experiences is just as bad as getting the "Forgotten Army (14th Army - South-East Asia) to talk about theirs

Yes that is good news. I've been dreading for several years Bletchley Park being demolished for redevelopment as its on a prime site.

The only bad thing about it in modern times is hollywood with their crap "U-571" film.

The "Real" capture of U-110 & the Enigma Machine & Codes......

....& the ships name was highly apt! HMS Bulldog

So you've already stated in the past that you purchase the Waily Fail just for the "points" it provides.....

.....think you really do need to take that FE course in economics! I'd also suggest another in Accountancy.

With the massive profits that the utilities companies make year out, year in, why we we now seeing this?

Genuine warning or scaremongering?

Personally, I think scaremongering as they know that the public are against them, so, enticing the government to cough up while they still enjoy the fatcat pay & bonuses?

We, by that I mean those who read the news, have been told for over 10 years now that many of our power stations are getting old and need replacing. The problem is that the government and the producers have not decided what type the new power stations should be or where to put them. And of course we have the NIMBY's saying don't build here and could you close or modernise the one that is already here because it is putting out too much pollution. The NIMBY's of course don't realise that there is a limited number of places you can actually build power stations.

Yes, that was noted. However, this country is that riddled with self importance/ignorance that BRITAIN couldn't do it off our own backs thereby reducing dependancy on foreign states?

It's a sad state of affairs as it stands!

When will you stop spouting B/S? I'm aware of the history, all I said was isn't it about time we re-started getting our country back onto a sound footing!

Doesn't Centrica ring any bells with you? Stop being a wanna-be politician based on the old victorian ways of ruling & spring forward into the 21st century.

As the Cyprus debacle has proven, which you are too blind to see, the EU cannot be trusted to operate a piss-up in a brewery or an orgy in a brothel, or for that matter, our own politicians.

You continue to make statements publicly, but your PM's don't gell with what you're stating. Stop PM's or I'll use them publicly to back up what I'm stating.

Cyprus, UK, France - you can't see the link & you entering politics....it shows!

We are in the EU are we not?

The UK does possess two military sovereign bases in Cyprus and if all goes
wrong we could end up loosing them.

When you attend your annual conference Taffy, better tell your leader that right or wrong, it's better to stick to one's gun - he'll gain respect that way, as it is.....
