Ah, we're back! Thank you. I've long been a fan of Spider Robinson's writing, and have almost all of his Callaghan's stories in my library. In the 1990s I was a regular in the Usenet newsgroup alt.callaghans, which I believe is still active as a Googlegroup. In retrospect, at that time in my life I needed a place like that, and I hope I gave as much help as I got there. The purpose of the fireplace was to toast the accomplishments of the living, honor the dead, and ask for prayers and good thoughts for the ill and injured. We've tried to establish a "Callaghan's Crosstime Saloon" thread here several times, but it always disappears after awhile. I hope incorporating Mike Callaghan's fireplace into Rocky's Cafe will serve the same purposes for the patrons of this august establishment. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Same here Rob, it's 11°C. 32F/0C here, and the fog is just starting to burn off. Just checked the back porch, most of the kitties are up and moving, but two of the black-and-white kittens are still snuggling on the chaise lounge. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Finally bought a car. A grey Toyota Yaris. Lots of problems with the insurance though. I've tried 4 insurance companies and none would have me. But now I've contacted a special organisation that gives an insurance to people who won't get an insurance elsewhere. It's much more expensive than a normal insurance(2000 euro's a year)and it takes longer to get it but there's no other solution. *sigh* Within a month I'll be driving my car, I hope... rOZZ Music Pictures |

2000 Euro on a Yaris - that makes my eyes water! I'm so glad I have a cheap to insure Land Rover - "only" about 600 Euro, which isn't much more than I was paying on tinny Agila it replaced, but its twice the size, faster, heavier, carries far more people/junk/logs and is only slightly less economic. Ah well the logic of car insurance - "risk based", well maybe but I doubt it... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Grrrrrr Here its almost impossible for young drivers to get insurance at sensible prices. A friend's daughter, a student teacher was asked to pay over 4000gbp on a Micra 1.0l worth less than 1000gbp. But she could be put on her dad's insurance (Jag XF, supercharged 5.2l) for something like an extra 150gbp. When quizzed about this the insurance company said something along the lines "You won't be letting her drive it on a Friday night so she won't be driving it with her friends in the car". True but she's driving it nearly every day to and from college with her friends in the car - she LOVES the Jag, apart from the amount of fuel it uses chugging around town - yes dad makes her fill it up!; meanwhile Dad chugs around in the Micra most of the time, until he needs to impress a client, then she has to use the bus...
