Message 1293748 - Posted: 11 Oct 2012, 8:59:40 UTC - in response to Message 1293711.

Thirty years is probably -not- long enough. I have had "eyes on" a highly technical report made to the CIC (you know, the "Pres") and the top brass of the Pentagon in the mid 1960s (around the end of the Mercury missions) that involved communications and weaponry using a -very- small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some of those capabilities, with facts, figures and photos included, would shock the world even today! (as in we -still- don't know they have it!!!)

Forget politics, money, etc. It's just the plain, old, "military secret".

The bottom line for us, however, is that the wonderful suggestions by everyone are not going to happen anytime soon for all of the reasons already stated in the previous posts. We will just have to do with what we have for now. Regardless, we are still breaking new ground with the world's most amazing super-computer (via distributed processing) made up of all you, and due to your wonderful help and the dedicated efforts of a tiny, extremely bright and innovative staff at the SSL.

p.s. The above "all of you, and..." phrase includes the GPU Users Group, Lunatics, and everyone else not specifically named, but definitely involved!) ;)

But please, everybody, don't stop making suggestions. It's always a pleasure to see great minds at work. That's how we got where we are today, and that's how we will get where we'll be tomorrow!!

I'd just like to say that whatever was done on Thursday to the up/download servers and the network link is working like a charm for me! (as of Saturday...)

Yep I have noticed work units uploading and downloading at quite some speed. Long may this continue.

Now on to a couple of unrelated topics.

(1). When will I be able to use my radeon gpu with regular seti workunits? For example multibeam (lunatics seemed to offer a solution but the windows installers have been removed).

(2). A little related to the above when will more astropulse units be available?

Agreed.

Whatever appears as the solution has to be commercially available, and not too expensive. Also, anything that is line of sight appears to be out as a solution unless permission is granted for a repeater.

Message 1300639 - Posted: 31 Oct 2012, 4:58:15 UTC - in response to Message 1291514.

I waited three months before posting this :)

The "Tech News" page at this location:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/tech_news.php

... is linked from the home page and provides a view of the occasional reports from Matt et al, the same posts that lead off these threads.

Since at least July, that page has been slightly corrupted. It's like it's missing a header or something, as it is showing some sort of raw database dump.

Another month has gone by, still broken. Nobody cares about this?

@David: I'm sorry to say but it hasn't been fixed?
When i view the page it is still not right.
The menubar that should be on top is displayed at the bottom of the page?

And just above the menu bar at the bottom of the page is a strange set of characters:

' ), ); ?>

Which look to me like a php tag mark or something....

Is anyone on staff aware of the problems we are experiencing? we are not getting units and we cannot report data. I had 5 day buffers and all six of my machines are out of seti data. I had to put them on another project to have work. This seems to happen a lot so I had increased my buffers to ride through this type of problem, even that was not enough this time.

I think the cheapest option would be to hook in with a local telco and just get some DSL lines stuck in. Better if they were VDSL off a local cabinet installation as much better speeds for the distance but even ADSL2+ would be decent with a few lines bonded together.

They could then be fed into something like a Cisco ASA or older PIX and then rules setup on the FW to only allow out the ports for the U/D traffic and only from the seti servers so all on campus stuff would be unaffected as it wouldn't be able to get out through it. The main crux would be if the local telco would be happy to let the traffic flow at full rate or if they would do a deal of restriction during the daytime to say 1/3 througput and then full throughput in offpeak times as the clients can get the data at anytime.

At the moment though the project has run out of work units so my machine is now solely crunching GPU tasks and ive had to use the WCG to get CPU tasks only to keep my work laptop happy and the home one(my home one is setup so that it vents the hot air onto a clothes airer and thus the energy gets used more efficently as its under warranty and will get swapped out again before it expires im not bothered about condensation issues which never occur anyway :) )

Just test message because of this http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=69946 message, testing does it change anything.

EDIT: It does, now all messages are visible. Some kind of bug when "Sort Oldest first" option is in use and page is gonna change when new message arrives.

Looks like a BOINC bug not a Seti@Home bug.

As Matt is out of the lab for a bit this thread is getting quite old.
If you want to see what the current server status is go to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html
If you want to discuss download/upload/whatever issue go to the number Crunching area, where folks will try their best to help you.
Otherwise, please don't post such issues here - you may sit around for a long time waiting for an answer.

I am glad someone got work units. I got tired of waiting and just shut down my machines that were dedicated to seti. It might be different if this was a first time incident, but something happens to the system on a weekly time table. It usually take a few days to fix, This time I have been down for quite a while.

Additionally on one from the staff has even taken time to post and tell us what is happening. No one has even tried to take five minutes to let us know.
