Skil, that is, in some ways a convenient characterization. It might mask the underlying hate that resides beneath the surface. Certainly, on our broadcasts there is enough hateful rhetoric to kick up dust -- and we all know there are plenty of weapons to go around to act on the rhetoric. I think our inclination to say 'this doesn't happen in civilized countries' is somewhat too self-congratulatory. colorado was a random shooting at random people. all 3 cases were done by apparently unbalanced individuals |

colorado was a random shooting at random people. all 3 cases were done by apparently unbalanced individuals And indeed the world suffers too many 'crazies'... But also, how much hatred is our own press stirring up in the name of sensationalism to grab profits rather than keeping to sane honest journalism?... Note: Avaaz: What the media isn’t telling you about #MuslimRage One US magazine cover screams out the media slant of the last two weeks... threatening us all. 13 Powerful Images of Muslim Rage ... we've collected 13 striking, powerful images of MUSLIM RAGE... ... a few that will strike a chill into your heart... All very silly pathetic stuff that unfortunately is causing harm. So how do we shame the gutter press to get real? All in our only world... Americans are apparently more efficient at killing people they don't like -- Sikh Temple anyone? Colorado? Fort Hood? |

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/09/2012919115731993126.html Q&A: Why are Muslims angry over video? So where were the Muslim protests, flag burning, killing, calls to behead, with Andres Serrano's photograph Piss Christ? After all in this case the US Government through the National Endowment for the Arts actually paid for the work.

I remember a big fuss about "The life of Brian". Stupidity knows no race/class/religion. It's an equal opportunity endowment. If you're looking for death threats from Christians, Jerry Springer - The Opera generated a few. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

To amplify ... Pakistani officials say they have opened an investigation into a businessman who has been accused of blasphemy after refusing to join protests over an anti-Islam video and allegedly trying to convince others also not to take part.

The video was an deliberate provocation in the long standing West Vs.Middle East thing which is about more than just religious differences. I don't think you do understand. It would be very hard for most in the USA to even begin to understand. If you live where the church is the government and there is a government department tasked with the prevention of vice and the promotion of virtue, speech is not free even in your own home, then perhaps you could understand that their culture can't envision free speech. To them everything possible to say is endorsed by the government.

And now the French have been put at risk because Charlie Hebdo magazine has published some anti Mohammed cartoons... Free speech or incitement? "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

The video was an deliberate provocation in the long standing West Vs.Middle East thing which is about more than just religious differences. I gets to the point of Guilt by association. We have freedom of speech on the US. Someone exercises that right in a defamitory way to an entire religion. The US gets blamed because we allow free speech. Much like the KKK and other racist groups this film falls under the "Not important enough to worry about" filings. It isn't relevant. Someone or some group made it relevant to Muslims. I'd like to also point out that we have several million Muslims in this country. Are they to blame as well? Why aren't they protesting and burning gov't buildings down. First, because we don't act like that as a society. Second, they probably heard of this video the same way we did, from the violent protests. The video was an deliberate provocation in the long standing West Vs.Middle East thing which is about more than just religious differences. How would they know the difference? Over there the media said the film was made by the US Government, and still does. They believe that the government here has a 100% spy on private citizen capability. Since the government knew about it and didn't stop it then the government endorsed it. It is what they know to be the truth.

The video was an deliberate provocation in the long standing West Vs.Middle East thing which is about more than just religious differences. Agreed. But the extremists should not have blamed an entire country for the actions of a couple of nutcases I just take exception to the sanctimonious comments here about how Christians would never behave like this and therefore so much better than Muslims. You are reading to much into the discussion. No-one has said Christians are better than Muslims. It was merely pointed out than in non-Muslim countries the same provocation did not produce the same extreme reaction as this issue has in the Muslim world. I think the main reaction here has been: Why was the reaction so strong by comparison? The war in Northern Island is a long standing religious war which is also about other deeper issues.... I think you will find it is about long standing "deeper issues" where the opponents happen to be of different religions. There is a difference. Religious wars are stupid. Yes Christians are just as guilty of stupidity as anyone else. Yes So there is no need for anyone here to be claiming that somehow Christians would never behave in such a terrible way.... The point as I have stated above is, that in recent history, given the same provocation, non-Muslims have not reacted as violently world wide. Feel free to condemn the idiocy of people without somehow ascribing it to the particular imaginary being they chose to believe in. Unfortunately in this case, the violence is directly attributable to their choice of imaginary friend. I am well aware that it is a tiny minority involved and that in western countries most Muslims feel embarrassed by what happened. This is definitely more a Middle East vs West thing. A bunch of radicals have used a backyard movie as a convenient opportunity for some general "Yank Bashing". They are the ones who turned it into a religious war and in doing so have only given more creedence to the anti-Muslim reactionaries in the West. T.A. |

....The violence at the weekend followed a parade by a republican flute band passing by nearby Clifton Street Orange Hall." The video was an deliberate provocation in the long standing West Vs.Middle East thing which is about more than just religious differences. I just take exception to the sanctimonious comments here about how Christians would never behave like this and therefore so much better than Muslims. It's offensive and blind. The war in Northern Island is a long standing religious war which is also about other deeper issues. Just like the hatred for the west by Muslim fanatics hasn't come out of nowhere and is about a lot more than who's God is bigger and better. Perhaps some people should start looking at the beam in their own eyes before pointing out the mote in someone else's. Religious wars are stupid. Christians are just as guilty of stupidity as anyone else. So there is no need for anyone here to be claiming that somehow Christians would never behave in such a terrible way. Christians have been guilty of some pretty awful things over history and really don't have a leg to stand on this respect. Feel free to condemn the idiocy of people without somehow ascribing it to the particular imaginary being they chose to believe in. Blaming their choice of god makes you guilty of the same sort of BS the rioters are, just to a different degree. Being a Christian doesn't somehow make you morally superior, or kinder, or less bloodthirsty. Reality Internet Personality |

....The violence at the weekend followed a parade by a republican flute band passing by nearby Clifton Street Orange Hall." Never said they wouldn't. But this act is not about a movie. The band marching that route was an act of deliberate provocation in the long standing Orange vs Green thing Ireland has, and is about more than just religious differences. This is more like the Serb vs Croat thing that effects Eastern Europe. T.A. |

Christians riot because of a flute band parade "Hijacked vehicles were set alight and in some cases were driven into police lines while motorists were advised to stay away from the area. As on Sunday night, loyalists near the Lower Shankill estate bombarded police officers with up to 15 petrol bombs, fireworks, bottles and bricks. The violence at the weekend followed a parade by a republican flute band passing by nearby Clifton Street Orange Hall." Yeah, because Christians would NEVER throw bombs or riot over something dumb. No but I recall the Church of England being quite miffed There was certainly some huffing and puffing over the movie but as I said, ....there was no rioting in the streets or bombing of British embassies... There was also an Italian movie called "Porca Madonna" or similiar (I forget the exact title) which invoked peaceful protests outside the theatres it was playing in. But once again there were no riots or bombing of embassies. T.A. |

This rioting nonsense is one reason I am an atheist. How much blood do you suppose has been spilled between atheists arguing over which one disbelieves in God the most? I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. Chris Hedges A riot is the language of the unheard. -Martin Luther King, Jr. |
