Message 1320264 - Posted: 27 Dec 2012, 1:01:19 UTC - in response to Message 1320257.

Why hasn't man been able to create even a simple single celled form of life yet?

Why do you believe man should have been able to create a single celled life form, given that the current best approximation suggests it took nature a few hundred million years, and man has been trying to reproduce the event for at most a couple of hundred years?

bobby

I didn't say "man should have." How do you know what happened before you became aware? You weren't there so how do you know? What IS nature to you? Is there anything that has been proven to you to your satisfaction without witnessing it?

Who says you're aware now?
"Go ask Alice" ... or Reginald Broccoli.

Why hasn't man been able to create even a simple single celled form of life yet?

Has anyone attempted to? Are you sure it hasn't been done?

It has indeed been attempted.
Originally, success was touted.
Unfortunately, I cannot find anything that still touts it as a success. I guess the beaker was contaminated?
I do not know where I originally heard of the experiment. I'd like to say "Cosmos", but something tells me I am wrong.

[EDIT]I guess it was covered in Cosmos! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yet1xkAv_HY.

I believe you missed a word at about 28 seconds and the same at about 58 seconds. It is an experiment to build amino acids and it worked. AFIK no one has tried to go from amino acids to life. Bit harder to put a black smoker and a tide pool in a flask.

Indeed you didn't say "man should have", you asked "why hasn't". When one asks "why hasn't such and such thing been done" the implication is that it should have been done. If you did not intend the implication then my apologies, otherwise you are being disingenuous.

How does one know anything? What in the quoted post suggests I know anything of what took place billions of years ago? Nature to me encompasses all things all matter/energy, forces, their interactions and everything that arises from them. And to your final question, yes, for instance, my parents had sex about 9 months before I was born, while I did not witness the event, it has been proven to my satisfaction.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

What life and what mechanics implementing that life?

Some good food for thought:

Artificial life

Non-cellular life

Hypothetical types of biochemistry

Now to cook your cookie... Are we God to the a-life forms when we run an a-life simulation on a computer? What of the Matrix?...

For doing that the 'hard way' outside the machinery of cellular life, various groups are indeed putting together the tools and examples for doing just that. However, the immense detail required is expensive and so there is a long way to go yet... There's going to be some fantastic medical spin-offs as a result.

As for why we're not able... Well, we are! Looks like I've been beaten to that answer for working within the existing cellular machinery!

You would all be off topic. The question is what God did before Creation, not after creation.

Nobody has yet proved there is a god, therefore how can anyone guess or imagine what one might have been doing before "creation". Nobody has proved that any god created us either, therefore it is a nonsense question.

If it was re-worded to ask "Assuming that there is a god, and assuming that this god did create the world and the universe, then what did this god do before that?" then you might have a basis for some conjecture. Even then there is simply too much assumption. This is a waste of time!

Time? It isn't wasted. It's ignored at our own peril.

I have clearly posted here what God did before time started in our verse, as it has been written in the Bible. You either believe in God and the Bible as truth or you do not.

that is not true I said he delivered pizza.

But more to the point if god is infinite he she or it is unknowable.

there for any god that is knowable is a creation of man, any other view

is the height of arrogance.

so are you arrogant, or is it ok to say the universe is a neat place

but man does not know every thing yet:)

Take comfort in your book, but I recommend that you take your moral's from the

new testament rather than the old it will make you a kinder person.

I don't claim to know anything about God more then what is in the Book.

And yes I struggle with arrogance, but a look around here will tell you that I do indeed have that under control as compared to others here.

What is knowable is within the Book called the Bible.

The universe is a very neat place, however man will never know every thing--ever. To say that is the height of arrogance.

Q: What did God do before creation?

A: Nothing, really, because it really doesn't exist. Whichever one strikes your fancy the most, all gods were created by humans to meet the psychological needs of the humans that invented them. There's nothing wrong with using symbols to meet your psychological needs, unless you forget they're mere symbols. Then, an ancient person's symbols are using you, and that's just pathetic.

So, just what did God do before creating the universe?
Was he just floating in nothingness?
Are we the creation of a bored supreme being?

Before everything began, there was nothing. Not even time and space.
What was God up to in the before time?

Wouldn't an eternity of solitude in nothingness drive any intelligent mind insane?
Are we the product of madness?

This was my original question. It seems straight forward enough to me, so why am I receiving notices of lockdowns on this thread?
I don't blame the mods, they aren't the one's who aren't getting along in here.

Religion claims to have all of the answers, science does not make such claims.
Science has no answer to what happened before time and space erupted from a singularity. This does not mean science will never know the answer but for now it's an unknown.

I'm still interested in what religious believers think their god was doing before creation? I don't care which god you follow.
