You have that sequence wrong. The request will come to the Regents of the University of California, if they wish to continue to receive Federal Funding, accompanied by a National Security Letter, who will pass it along to the Powers at Berkeley, who will tell DA to do it or you are fired. If DA refuses, each person in turn on the BOINC project will get the same ultimatum until it is done or BOINC ceases to exist.

Yes, DA's paycheck comes in part from Federal Government money. No question what he does.

I don't have any sympathy with people roaming the streets.

The end result is crashed windows and possibly damaged or even destroyed properties.

In some instances, people in uniform turn their weapon on you without a previous warning. To me, this does not make any sense either.

There are domestic terrorists and foreign terrorists.

The domestic ones are treated like ordinary criminals and get their rights; well, as long as the police don't think there is a bomb waiting to go off; in that case they will do what they think they need to locate it. The exception came from kidnapping cases and the need of the police to swiftly locate a victim that may still be alive. Same thing for a bomb with a timer.

Foreign terrorists are not US Citizens and many of the protections of the US Constitution do not apply to them, so they end up at Gitmo being water boarded. Since they are not state actors then Geneva doesn't apply either.

The odd ball case is the foreign terrorist caught in the USA on a valid visa. Being caught in the USA and legally here, he might be due the protections of the US Constitution. I don't think this case has come before SCOTUS yet.

The other odd ball is the US Citizen terrorist caught overseas. I suspect the government would take the position he abrogated his citizenship in becoming a terrorist and thus treat him as a foreign terrorist.

In any case this is getting far away from Skype and the company that owns it and their decision to hand over user information.

So there are two different ways in which countries are governed in quite a good way, at least when it comes to the handling and execution of the laws, which always is the most important point - namely republics and monarchies.

Do we find politicians in both of these governing forms? Are they supposed to be enforcing the rules, or do they just agree on their meaning and contents as proposed?

Police sometimes chose their own way of interpreting things. They see the bad things right on the spot and try to get it away without hesitation. If there is disagreement when it comes to something, the matter should be brought to the courts for proper settlement.

Again, we are back to politics. They come up with new laws and try improving existing ones. Laws that are already in existence and valid are being handled by the courts. If you are lucky, you could end up a free man - if not so, you might end up dead, possibly already in the streets.

I guess there are things and lessons still to be learnt, by all of us.
