I'm sure they [nay sayers] are...

Do forks cause obesity? Fat

Do pencils cause spelling errors? blame the pencil

Do keyboards and blogs cause stupid journalism? ignorant

Do beds cause unwanted pregnancies? have children from unwedded relationships

Do stoves cause house fires? don't know what a fire extinguisher is

Do boats cause drownings? don't know bow from stern

Do guns cause violence? ignorant of fact's because they didn't show up while the left side here dropped their fact's.

Indeed, +1 for Guy.

Guns don’t cause violence but access to guns turns violence deadly and boosts the chances of lethal accidents. Look through statistics compiled by the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the numbers speak for themselves:

•Two-thirds of the 179,000 homicides committed during the 2000s made use of a firearm, usually a handgun.

• If a gun is used during a domestic violence assault, there’s a 23-fold increased likelihood that the victim will die. Women who are victims of domestic violence are five times more likely to be killed if their abuser owns a firearm.

• Having a gun facilitates suicide. According to a California study, suicide by handgun is the leading cause of death in the first year after people buy one. Many don’t wait that long. In the first week after the purchase of a handgun, the suicide rate among firearm purchasers was 57 times as high as the adjusted rate in the general population. More than 75 percent of guns used in suicide attempts and accidental injuries of people under 20 were stored in the home of the victim, a relative, or friend. Would all these people have committed suicide if a gun had not been easily available? Some would have, of course, but the easier (and faster) it is to kill one’s self, the more likely a person is to do it.

The most deadly assault weapon ever used on American soil was a box cutter, not a firearm. Shall we ban them? The ignorance here is astounding.

Should the US ban box cutters. No.

Should the US ban people from carrying box cutters and knives, on their person in public places. Yes.

People who don't know what a gun is, don't know what parts there are to a gun, can't speak intelligently about the capabilities of a gun, or don't know the original reason it was placed in the bill of rights immediatley after the 1st, should not be allowed to write laws about guns.

Guy, I do know what a rifle is, I was in the USMC in the 60's, and I feel the current laws need to be amended. You young ideologues need to figure out how to solve problems.

"On every question of construction (of the Constitution) let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed." (Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, June 12, 1823, The Complete Jefferson, p. 322)

"The whole of the Bill (of Rights) is a declaration of the right of the people at large or considered as individuals.... It establishes some rights of the individual as unalienable and which consequently, no majority has a right to deprive them of." (Albert Gallatin of the New York Historical Society, October 7, 1789)

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been recognized by the General Government; but the best security of that right after all is, the military spirit, that taste for martial exercises, which has always distinguished the free citizens of these States....Such men form the best barrier to the liberties of America" - (Gazette of the United States, October 14, 1789.)

Adolph Hitler

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.

There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress.

Yep, ID has lost his guns. ATF can pick them up in the morning.

There is only One Solution.

Get rid of The American White Male.

In my mind, it has always been The Solution. My reading of The History Of White People, has put The Confirmation Stamp on it.

So, when The Disarmament Of America is Accomplished, and All DoGooders are Grinning Wide, Cheering and Happy, remember:

Until The American White Male is Wiped Out, The American Massacre will continue.

The American White Male is An Ingenius Killing Machine. And will continue to kill, singularly and In Mass Quantities, till he is Disposed Of.

Perhaps we should write sensible gun laws based on real facts and not on knee jerk feel-good reactions that don't address the real problem.

Do forks cause obesity?

Do pencils cause spelling errors?

Do keyboards and blogs cause stupid journalism?

Do beds cause unwanted pregnancies?

Do stoves cause house fires?

Do boats cause drownings?

Do guns cause violence?

How a high-speed bullet damages an organ

Yes, I can totally see the parallels with forks and pencils. Its almost as if forks and pencils are specifically designed to do as much damage as possible to the human body.

Its been suggested that the people here who know how to shoot and fire a gun are somehow the experts and should be listened to. I know I'm not the only physicist here, I know I'm not the only person completely and utterly aware of just exactly how a gun works and what it is exactly designed to do.

I was once lucky enough to be given a talk on guns and ballistics at a UK military weapons research army base on how bullets are designed in such a way to move through the human body and cause as much destruction as possible.

To anyone with half a brain the analogy with forks, pencils, keyboards, blogs, unwanted pregnancies etc are so ludicrous as to serve no other purpose than to broadcast the authors ignorance to as wide an audience as possible.

Forks are designed to transfer food from plate to mouth as efficienly as possible with out making a mess. Take away a person's fork and they will make a mess.

Pencils are designed to make a mark on paper, take away your pencil and it becomes difficult to make a mark on paper.

Keyboards are designed to transfer letters digital information. Take away a keyboard and it becomes difficult to input letters into your computer.

Blogs are designed as a medium for sharing ideas with a wide audience on the internet. Take away someone's blog and they will have difficulty expressing those ideas (however blogs are not the only thing designed for this purpose, so I am sure they will be fine)

Beds are designed as a comfortable place to sleep or have sex. Take away someone's bed and they will have a less comfortable place to sleep and have sex.

Stoves are designed to heat and prepare food. Take away your stove and you will have trouble heating and preparing food.

Boats are designed to allow people to float upon the surface of the water without getting wet. Take away a boat and people will have trouble floating on the water without getting wet.

Guns are designed to kill, easily, and from a distance. Take away someone's gun and they will have trouble killing easily, and from a distance.

I hope I've cleared up your silly misconception as to the purpose of ordinary household objects.

I have owned guns. Funny thing is, I do not now and I never sold one. That means they went to criminals. The people who want guns the most is people who should have them the least. So I have no issue with restricting what TYPE of guns people can own. No one needs armor piercing weapons, no one needs 30+ round clips, no one needs 50 caliber shot. Putting restrictions, background checks, limits and psych evaluations before someone can purchase a weapon seems the LEAST we could do.

But even so, I do not believe gun control is the answer. We need to stop the problem at the source, the people that pull those triggers. We need a mental health system available to EVERYONE that is actually useful. One that follows up and continues to treat people. And yes, that means we not only need a national health plan, but we also need to extend it to mental health care.

So take all the discussion of limiting health care, cutting funds for Medicare/Medicade, and roll them up in a cone and place firmly in a solar-challenged location. These people need help long before they need executed.

I don't think it's about more gun control. I grew up in the south with gun's everywhere and we never shot anyone. This (shooting) is about people who aren't taught the value of life.

Ya, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Barry Obama and the left-Socialist, all give great speech and want your guns for a reason. If you forget your history your bound to be ignorant and repeat the same stupid mistakes.

You MEAN---won the debate.

Message 1317133 - Posted: 19 Dec 2012, 14:59:34 UTC - in response to Message 1317063.

In the early 1990's the Government introduced its "Care in the Community" Scheme based upon the premise that, mildly mentally ill people would have a better quality of life by being integrated into the local community rather than being segregated in day centres. Many were closed down and it was seen as also a cost cutting measure. We then saw people walking around in the streets talking to themselves. There was one old man that used to beg passers by for 10p for a cup of tea, and as soon as he had collected enough he bought a bottle of cider from the corner shop and went and got drunk in the local park.

In our town was a large partly residential day centre and treatment annexe of a South London mental Hospital, it closed in the 90's and became a housing estate, but does now include a smaller day centre and short-term care home for people with learning difficulties, run by a national charity. They seem to have learned the lesson that you can't chuck mildly mentally ill people on the streets, and expect them to keep out of trouble. Thank god we have the gun laws we do.

Soft is right about the types of gun that are available to firearm collectors, and whether they should be needed by civilians. The news coming in today is that the President is going to ban or restrict assault weapons, but that still leaves hand guns and hunting rifles. What is it about the American male that makes them love to fire bullets at things? And you're not considered a man unless you've killed a deer each year. Ex service people trained for years to use guns might have some difficulty in switching off, but I don't understand the rest of it.

If America firmly believes that they need to arm their policemen, and the public need to be allowed to carry guns to protect themselves, then isn't there something wrong with that society in the first place? This constitutional right seems like a smokescreen.

The hunters I know who kill a deer also eat that same deer. Along with other game animals they hunt. The food they put in the freezer helps them make ends meet. Why do you consider that Macho?

I resent the fact that you all lump gun owners as evil. Im just as law abiding as any of you.
