O?

just click the half of Misfit's sig...you'll get there.

I was wondering what you were talking about.. now I see. Looks like a problem with Mundayweb. I'll put up the non-stats one for now.

Account where? Do you mean an account for google or an account for PQ?

Look at your own sig and you'll see.

Yeah :( I e-mailed him about it...he usually gets back really quick.

I'm sure many of you have heard of PlanetQuest, a future distributed computing project that will let our computers search for potential extrasolar planets.....

Is this project dead? I signed up for newsletters almost a year ago, received two, and then nothing. I e-mailed the project director who told me "The project is still going to happen, we expect a beta release in mid 2006". Still, the website shows no updates whatsoever since May 2005, and has the audacity to ask for donations!

Is it just me, or if an organization/project wants the public to donate, shouldn't they keep the public informed as opposed to just offering old news? It looks like a great project, and I hope it happens, but to me it looks poorly, poorly organized and I have a suspicion it may disappear.

Any thoughts?

There's a googlegroup, where you can (occasionally) hear from creators of the project.

Count yourself as lucky.
I signed up for the newsletter about seven months ago.
The result? Nothing.

Latest update:

"Anyway, we are working on a Newsletter but are also way under
staffed until we can get to our first release. We will be mailing
something out soon, with full details as to what we have been up to and
projections of where we are going. Thanks for your patience!

We have had successful observing runs in Australia and California,
have a running detection algorithm and binary star classifier, and have
written new BOINC scripts so we can get it all to you folks. Education
is also proceeding slowly but surely with our furst efforts being a
broad overview of the astronomy of all cultures.

So, please stay tuned. In terms of NASA's cheaper, better, faster,
the engineer's have said that one can only have two out of three. Since
we are not compromising better, and have tried to avoid charging for
PlanetQuest, we're having to go a bit with non-faster, so to speak.

With very best regards, Laurance Doyle"

In regards to getting the next newsletter soon:

"Sorry, no. We have it ready, but we await a decision by one of the
PQ board members as to whether we want to announce a more official
collaboration with SETI Institute or not in this one."

David Gutelius is no longer in charge of day to day operations at PlanetQuest.
Now it's Laurance Doyle and DG oversees the "bigger picture", whatever that is.
I have a feeling since LD is part of seti.org his time might be stretched a little thin.

Anybody have information about the kickoff for "PlanetQuest" BOINC? This looks like a pretty cool project, but it appears nothing much has happened there.

Thanks,
Mark

You are correct that not much seems to be going on right now. However, I have sent emails out to admin asking for a project update.

Thanks Misfit, this seems like a fun one to get in on when it does finally kick in.

Got this in response to and email I sent a couple of days ago....

Hi Jim!

We have mostly been working on the transit detection algorithm(s)
to
insure that it takes less than the age of the universe to derive
parameters (of stars and planets) from the light curvee without human
intervention. We'll also, however, need to add some BOINC utilities to
handle the more complext PlanetQuest requirements. Finally, we've been
compiling our star catalogue from N and S Hemisphere observations made
last year. So, we hope to show all this in a web update soon as we can.

Much thanks for your interest and please stay tuned! With best
regards, Laurance Doyle

I'd still like to know what happened with the monthly update e-mails. Haven't seen one now for, oh, about a year. Checked their website and nothing has changed there except that they want donations without us participating at all. I donate to SETI, but I'm also crunching too. What happens if we donate and they go bust? Will we see that money come back to us? I doubt it.... )-:<

I get the abridged email updates about every other day in my email box. I've stopped reading them and just delete them. I subscribed when they first started figuring I could get in at the start, but as of yet, I've seen nothing worth the time to read.

I was getting them for a while. They were all blah, blah, blah, nothing new. So I filtered them out. If and when I see something new on their website, I may become interested again. Until then, they're way back on the back burner.... (-:<

[edit] Hang on for a minute, let me check something.... [/edit]
[edit]
This is from my "other" website:
This project is a distributed computing venture that processes data allowing you to search for and discover new planets, classify stars and learn new facts about known stars. [Planned public beta testing release, end of 2005. Planned live public release, Spring 2006]

So, where's the Beta? We're getting close to Spring 2006, what's up with that? I doubt I still have the e-mail I got where they reported that information.
