Well their dream of collaborating with NASA came thru. They will be using data from the Kepler telescope after its launch next year. It's why PQ won't have a booth at SpaceFest; they plan to be at the Kepler launch at that time.

The Kepler launch is Feb 2009, same time frame as SpaceFest.

NASA invites you to submit your name to be included on a DVD that will be rocketed into space as part of NASA's Kepler Mission, scheduled to launch in February 2009.

The Name in Space DVD will be mounted on the exterior of the spacecraft in November 2008. A copy of the DVD with all of the names and messages will be given to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

Those who want to participate in the Name in Space project should submit their name, the state or country they live in and, if they desire, a short statement (500 words or less) answering the question: "Why do you think the Kepler Mission is important?"

A Certificate of Participation will be generated for printing when you register on the Kepler Mission Web site.

The deadline for submissions to the Kepler Mission Web site is Nov. 1, 2008.

To submit your name and learn more about the Kepler Mission, visit http://kepler.nasa.gov/

At least their website has been updated. (And that took some prodding.)

This is one of those things I am dying to be part of, and can't figure if I have the time/computer capacity. Sigh. But oh, does it ever sound neat and amazing and -- wow, it makes me feel like a googly-eyed young sf-fan again! (which is I guess fitting for a first post).

Is Pluto a planet? What defines a planet? Are other planets yet to be discovered?

Join Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, American Museum of Natural History, and Dr. Mark Sykes, Planetary Science Institute, as they square off in a debate of these questions during this free, one-hour webcast on Aug. 14, 2008, 4:30 p.m. EDT. The debate will be moderated by Ira Flatow, host of NPR's Science Friday, and streamed live on the Web. Registration for the webcast is required by noon, Aug. 13, 2008.

This event is part of a larger conference -- The Great Planet Debate: Science as Process -- Aug. 14-16 at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's Kossiakoff Center in Laurel, Md. The conference includes two days of scientific sessions to discuss and debate planet formation and characteristics, as well as the various criteria that can be used to define and categorize planets. An educator's workshop follows on the third day to discuss how teachers can use this debate to explain science as a process.

For more information and to register, go to http://gpd.jhuapl.edu

For those attending in person, regular registration is available at the same site, under the "REGISTRATION" tab. The registration fee is waived for teachers and students.
