Yes you have got it. Megaannum = 1 million years is the same as a gigayear. Why every scientist has to invent there own geekspeak is beyond me. I never heard of a MA untill I did a search on Antartica.

They aren't the same.

A megaannum is the same as a megayear, 1 million years. Mega = 10^6.

A gigayear is 1000 million years. Giga = 10^9.

Let's see.

Wood. Medium compressive strength along the grain. Low compressive strength across the grain. Somewhat lower tensile strength.

Concrete, brick, cinder block and mortar. High compressive strength. Much lower tensile strength. Cinder Block is somewhat less strong than brick and concrete.

Steel: High strength, but expensive.

Cast Iron fired with coal: Very brittle.
