This should be news for those who don't like to run Beta versions of BOINC.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Not sure when it happened, but I noticed on another project forum (Rosetta) that 7.0.28 is now Recommended. It seems to have slipped out "under the radar" over the last few days, as there does not seem to have been an announcement on BOINC or project News but 7.0.28 is now the recommended version for:

Windows x86
Windows 64 bit
Linux x86
Linux 64 bit
Mac OS X (Intel)

I have been running 7.0.28 since 25 May (released 15 May as Beta), as I was having work fetch problems with 7.0.25

I've been wondering when this would happen.

I had no real issues with 7.0.28 on Windows or Linux, Still running 7.0.28.

Thanks for the update.

I found the release date as a Recommended version http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/VersionHistory shows this as 29 June '12. The download page shows the release date as 21 May, which I think was the Beta release.

I thought new recommended versions usually got announced officially rather than in forum posts, but I might be wrong about that.

[NOTE TO MODS]
Please could this thread be made Sticky for a few days, as many 7.0.25 users have complained of problems.

I don't think I have ever seen any kind of "official" notice about a new release. I would guess they rely on the built in notification system in BOINC informing users of a new version.

However, You can always find the recommended version on the BOINC download page.

Well, this evening I changed BOINC versions from 7.0.25 --> 7.0.28, on 3 hosts
and my LT, took 20 minutes. No High Priority. Looks good.
Noticed a warning unrecognized <zero_debt> in cc_config, well I remove
it.

That doesn't work. You have to use the Red X function and make your request there.

Sticking with 6.12.34 for now. Will there be an RAC improvement with 7.0.28?

The only real way for a version of BOINC to improve RAC would be for it to steal fewer CPU cycles from crunching. Let's see, I did restart BOINC about 47 hours ago, and it has used 34 seconds of CPU time since then. So for CPU crunching there's a potential speedup of 0.02% if there were a version of BOINC which didn't use any CPU time at all.

I do run with BOINC Manager actually shut down most of the time, it tends to use more CPU than BOINC itself, and the frequent updates of information to display would increase BOINC CPU usage too. None of that makes a practical difference with recent desktop systems.

The CPU usage for BOINC seems consistent with my systems. With 109 seconds after 6 days of it running. Although I do have Manager running on this system it has clocked in with 40 seconds in the same amount of time.

Been running 7.0.28 on Windoze 7 (64-bit) for a few days now with no problems... HOWEVER, I've got an i7 machine that seems to only want to download CUDA tasks. That's fine and dandy for my two cuda cards, but the 8 cores in my CPU are just sitting there twiddling their thumbs. I have other machines downloading non-cuda tasks... anyone have any idea why my workhorse isn't getting any?

Is BOINC asking for CPU work? As long as BOINC is asking for both CPU and GPU work, Scheduler will fill the request for the most capable device. Thus, trick is to get BOINC to temporarily stop asking for GPU work. Easiest way is to turn it off in Project preferences on website. That will be sent to BOINC on next update, and you'll see a line "don't fetch Nvidia GPU tasks" on your project properties in BOINC. When you get enough cpu work, turn gpu fetch back on.

If it isn't asking for CPU work, you may need to change your cache settings. With BOINC 7.0.xx, cache settings are different from prior versions, but initially the old settings are carried forward which causes a lot of problems. You'll need to make sure they are correct - now the first number is a minimum and the sum of the two is a max. BOINC tries to fill up to max, then won't ask until you reach min. I also upgraded today and I'm still working that out.

It is asking for both, but only gets cuda tasks. I increased my minimum buffer (from 0) and will try to stop the GPU fetch for a bit to see if that helps. Thanks.
