And what would lead you to that conclusion? I guess some of the posters here are eligible for support by the U.S. Government. |

not exactly. The Mexican Gov't was giving land away to white settlers of Mexican territory if they farmed it for a period of time. There is an organization in Texas recognizing the original 300 families that settled in Texas. Yes Slavery was also a problem for the Mexican Gov't In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

One minor detail you left out -- the Americans who were (in today's parlance) illegal immigrants, revolted to keep slavery --- which wasn't legal in Mexico. welcome to American History 101. |

By the 1840's claims on the west coast north of California included the Russians, the Brits and the US. Prior the 1820's, Spain was also in the mix. By the time of the US conquest and treaty with Mexico in 1848, the Russians had bailed out and the US signed a treaty with the Brits (Webster/Ashburton I believe) which settled a number of border disputes from Maine to the Pacific coast. The US/British compromise there gave what is now British Columbia to the British -- the US had claimed north to 54'40" -- and the remainder to the US. welcome to American History 101. Though they glazed over the reason for the texas revolt I'll explain it here. Most whites when they finally got to Texas didn't want to convert to Catholicism nor did they want to become Mexican citizens or learn Spanish. What we learned from that is Americans haven't really changed in 160+ years In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

The constant conflicts in the Texas region in the mid 19th century eventually led to the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846 and ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Due to the treaty Mexico lost more than 960,000 square miles (about 2,500,000 km²) of land, 55% of its national territory, including what is today California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. |

And it was pressed on the US by southern interests in a southern railroad line to California. The Gadsden purchase was about the only legal purchase of Mexican territory. However, this purchase was pretty much forced on the Mexican Gov't of the time. |

Nick, Mexico's 'claim' to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California is likely superior to the Argentine claim. The Argentine NEVER had possession of the Falklands -- in fact, I don't think the Spanish did either. |

Hey, we're not giving Texas back to Mexico -- we stole it fair and square. Don't let President Cristina Fernández Kirchner of ARGENTINA find this out else she'l get Mexico to side with here over the Falklands issue with the UK. In the process, if she was to win her case over the Falklands; Mexico, through dual process, may also be able to claim Texas back too??? You may also have to pay Mexico for it's lost oil revenues over the past century....ouch!! About the same for me -- my maternal grandfather is the only one who would trail back to the mid 19th century. Then again, my wife has at least one line which goes back to the late 17th century -- an indentured servant from England (I think we would call them immigrant labor today). Dave, might be neat if all those nativists in this country were compelled to put up or shut up and prove their bona fides by demonstrating lineage IN North America prior to 1607. |

Skill, don't you think ID and Dull would be much happier campers in Texas than in most other locales? Barry, IIRC some time back I suggested that they form a team. |
