One thing I learned from Ollie North is I don't recall anything about anything.

Misfit, the Federal government was simply letting Arizona do their own leg work -- after all, states rights (and states wrongs) are what they are.

And yes, it was political baiting -- you know that evil process that you'd never engage in yourself <chuckle>

Misfit, it looks like the Federal Government is taking seriously the pressure from the TeaPublicans to limit government. That is what they have been pushing for, right?

*** political bait detected ***

I didn't read that at all in the Fed's response. Do a malware scan and make sure your browser hasn't been hijacked.

Well, it did for that arch-socialist -- Reagan.

Besides, looks like the link above renders the final 1/4 useless by executive order.

Well, GOOD FOR HIM! Wide open border. That'll only lead to good things.

The impression one had of the original law was that it *compelled* local law enforcement to check for papers.

The read here now is that it *allows* local law enforcement to check for papers during a traffic stop. That is a significant difference. For Sheriff Joe's boys that never made a difference, they have been targeting 'driving while Hispanic' for years and still will.

Actually, the more telling ruling today was the the Supreme Legislature sustaining with a 5/4 Teapublican Majority the 'corporations are people' ruling against the 100 year+ standing law in left wing Montana regarding limits on corporate spending.

That is a pro-oligarchy ruling. Then again, constraints on the Arizona immigration law are also pro-oligarchy as it allows the non-documented to apply for jobs.

Supreme Court strikes down key provisions, but not all, of Arizona immigration law

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, June 25, 7:35 AM

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has struck down key provisions of Arizona’s crackdown on immigrants.

But the court said Monday that one much-debated part of the law could go forward — the portion requiring police to check the status of someone they suspect is not in the United States legally. Even there, though, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges.

The decision upholds the “show me your papers” provision for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

Justice Kennedy wrote the opinion for the court that was unanimous on allowing the status check to go forward. The court was divided on striking down the other portions.
