Mmmm...

First we had "Metro" but that name is already widely used elsewhere and trademarked by other than Microsoft.

Then we have "Modern" but that name is already...

MS to reuse name from KDE and NSIS

Oh my. Microsoft has been using the "Metro" name to describe their new UX without prior careful checking for trademark infringement. PR blunder...

... In its corporate rush, MS [has] picked [a] new name: Modern UI. Better they could safely stay with typically long "Windows 8 UI Style" term because Modern UI's been already taken not just once...

What's in a name?

IT is what we make it!

Put the Start menu back in Windows® 8

I use Classic Shell for that. When using it with Windows 8 you can configure it so you go straight to the desktop. Which I think is the default setting when install in 8.

For those running Win 8 Pro, there is an offer at the moment for Media Center Pack for free until January 31 2013.

Well, (unfortunately) no surprise here:

Vupen brags about Windows 8 hack

French IT security company Vupen has bragged on Twitter that it already has a Windows 8 exploit on offer. Apparently, the exploit combines several unpatched (0-day) security holes in the new version of Windows and the bundled Internet Explorer 10 browser to inject malicious code...

Has Windows bloated to the point of abuse and being unmaintainable?

Give it a rest Martin. Had Linux have the same market share, you just cannot guarantee that Linux would be as "secure" as it is.

Whilst I would hate to have to agree with Sirius .

Windows works for a LOT of people. I have 2 machines I can boot to Linux on and that works for me. I use both for different things. However if and when Linux becomes mainstream it will have problems

38 pages worth. How Charming!

Had Martin posted that link in his Linux thread, it would more than likely have passed me by.

Unfortunately, just like many Linux/Apple geeks, they just cannot pass a windows thread/forum without having to stick their oars in!

I've said it on his thread & I'll repeat it here: -

Which do you see as working 'better': Secure by design or Marketing compromised to hell?

Note that Windows is the only OS that I know of that appears to support viruses and such a wide range of malware...

How many home users on Linux?

Let's assume that the undetected O/S's are Linux....

That'll bring the total to 01.05%

& let's assume that the Other is Linux based...

that's a grand total of 01.11%

How many computers in use worldwide?

Good for you & your point being?

I run Windows XP,Vista,Win 7, Win 8, SBS 2008/2011, Server 2008/2012, WHS, Solaris 10 Enterprise, Linux Mint 13, with Win 8 & Mint being VM's.....

....& my point being...so what, I run what I want/need to run without lambasting the various O/S's.

If I have a problem, I ask the various O/S guru's for assistance. However, some linux guru's have shown that they're that superior that providing assistance is beyond them.

Nice advertising for that O/S.

There's an awful lot more of Linux around than you're giving credit...

Meanwhile, proprietary lock-in is not to be underestimated either...

So, you can pick your numbers:

Why do super computers use Linux?

Most websites use unix/linux: operating systems for websites

And even for the desktop, w3 adds up 5% for Linux and scarily close to Apple! OS Platform Statistics

It's all a numbers game... And the numbers can quickly change. Linux looks to crucially have the lead on mobile devices for obvious reasons of efficiency and low cost...

A few Windows8 snippets:

Microsoft's touching Xmas gift for Brits: MORE licensing price hikes

... alerted customers of an upward swing in a range of other software products that will impact companies depending on their licensing position...

Windows 8, Surface slabs ALREADY need critical security patch

Mega vulns affect ALL Windows kit from XP onward ...

Microsoft offers cut-price Win 8 PCs and fondletops to UK schools

British schoolkids and teachers are to be offered discounted Windows 8 laptops and tabs in a Microsoft programme to close the digital divide. ...

... The Shape the Future launch is described in terms of using computers to help improve children’s earning potential later in life; others, particularly those in open source, will see such offers through the filter of the Jesuit boast: “Give me the child for his first seven years and I'll give you the man.”

The national education curriculum has already been criticised for equipping students with all the IT skills necessary to open and use a Word or Excel doc.

Windows 8, the post-PC world, and Linux: Microsoft will prevail

Op-ed: An opening for Linux? A herald of the end of the PC? No, and no.

The comments for that last article are rather telling for the angle taken... A rather shallow marketing placement piece?...

You are still missing the point. If I want to discuss Linux & learn/debate/knock it,

I post in your linux thread which has many useful tips. One thing I do not do is to rubbish your thread with Windows is great & linux is crap issues, so I would expect a so called Linux guru to show some consideration: -

Otherwise, you'll just be seen as a computer geek/Linux nerd with no life.

People use what they feel compfortable with.

End of story!

Merely counterpointing what appears to be blatant advertising for Microsoft and Windows8 in a forum dedicated to number crunching s@h work units. There are many other systems other than just "Windows". Perhaps "Politics" is a more appropriate forum for this thread, just as where the parallel Linux thread got kicked.

Or is it Windows fan-boi-ism all the way?

That's what the Marketing people would have you believe. There's a lot of powerful advertising for that.

Meanwhile, people do have a choice and some people do have a brain for themselves. (Best is a new thread for that aspect. Your choice.)

Rather an interesting turn:

Blizzard Facing Lawsuit Over Forceful Authenticator Purchases

... class damages for consumer fraud, unjust enrichment, negligence, breach of contract and bailment...

... The lawsuit claims that Blizzard has been the subject of repeated security breaches including the Battle.net hack in August and those experienced in May. Instead of securing personal information on its servers, Blizzard is reportedly forcing customers to purchase an authenticator "in order to have even minimal protection for their sensitive personal, private, and financial data."...

My own personal opinion is that there are three significant aspects for Microsoft Windows:

1: There is the general opinion that you must use "anti virus" programs to "secure" Windows systems;

2: And the manufacturer of Windows also sells "anti virus" products and 'after-care' security updates and support to patch over the security holes in the original product...

3: Is the "no class actions" clause in the latest Microsoft EULA 'valid' and enforceable?...

This could be an interesting addition to the ongoing legal MAD wars...
