Indeed

Is that all carefully crafted so as not to be sued by Apple for any rounded corners that might be used anywhere?...

All of this, so priceless, and so true. Martin, are you sure you didn't just infringe on Apples patent on talking about rounded corners?

Message 1262137 - Posted: 19 Jul 2012, 7:57:57 UTC - in response to Message 1261847.

I tried to instal it as a virtualbox "guest" OS. Unfortunately my Lappie doesn't have VT-x or VT-i support so can't run it via vbox.

I'll start by saying I have NOT used Win8, not even within Vbox, BUT: I'm curious, you shouldn't need VT-x at all. All you should need to do is enable IO-APIC for 64-bit support before you begin to install the OS. I would think...

I can run XP and Linux Mint 13 within vbox, but the win8 preview fails to install. When the vbox first starts it it comes up with a popup complaining about vt-x support, if you continue past that the install fails after a few minutes of copying files. I have done this 3 times, so in the end just nuked the virtual machine.

I'm sorry to hear that. That stinks considering VBox uses a very common 'hardware' setup for its environment. Perhaps the final release will be better, or perhaps we are seeing first hand the examples of Microsoft's methods to keep their OS from being anything but native on a machine.

At work we found the Release Preview requires the CPU, or virtual CPU, to support NX bit.

I received a letter today, certified mail, that I am being sued by Apple. Apparently they have a patent on talking about their patent on talking about their rounded corners.

An 'interesting' twist:

Is this where Microsoft is trying to 'follow' Apple's example?

Valve boss Gabe Newell calls Windows 8 a 'catastrophe'

... Speaking at the Casual Connect game conference in Seattle, Gabe Newell said the next version of Windows could mean big changes to the PC market.

Many took his comment as a criticism of the changed user interface in Windows 8 as well as its built-in Windows Store.

The Windows Store could dent the success of Valve's own online market, Steam, through which players buy games.

Hat tricks

Mr Newell, who worked for Microsoft for 13 years on Windows, said his company had embraced the open-source software Linux as a "hedging strategy" designed to offset some of the damage Windows 8 was likely to do. ...

... This is seen by commentators to be a reference to the inclusion of a Windows Store in the Microsoft operating system.

This is a shop through which users will be able to buy apps for their Windows 8 device.

On some versions of Windows 8, it will be the only way to get downloadable software such as games.

Microsoft takes a cut, up to 30%, of every sale made through this store. ...

Some of the latest Windows 8 snippets from the internet:

Microsoft Surface slate: Acer, resellers predict a riot

Who the hell does Ballmer think he is? Apple?

Microsoft has scored two own goals by getting into the hardware game with Surface, the software giant's design for a laptop that thinks it's a tablet: long-standing PC manufacturers are alienated, and there is growing disquiet in the channel over Redmond's decision to sell the lap slab direct. ...

Microsoft tightens grip on OEM Windows 8 licensing

... If the slides are authentic, under OA 3.0, manufacturers will be required to write a unique Windows product key into the BIOS of each new PC, keyed to that particular computer's hardware. In the past, OEMs used the same product key for every PC they shipped.

The vendors will also now obtain their product keys directly from Microsoft via electronic delivery, and each new PC will come with a "Genuine Microsoft" sticker affixed, rather than the earlier Windows Certificate of Authenticity.

Factories will also be required to file production reports to Microsoft detailing their license compliance. ...

No Booting Straight to Desktop in Windows 8

... Previous test builds allowed Windows 8 users to create a shortcut that switches to the Windows 8 desktop. If the user didn't want to boot their machine into the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro), they could simply schedule this shortcut to be activated immediately after logging into the user's account.

Rafael Rivera, coauthor of the forthcoming Windows 8 Secrets, has reportedly verified with RTM downloaders that Microsoft's block of the boot bypass is indeed in place. He also believes that Microsoft has blocked the ability for administrators to use Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled startup screen. That said, it seems that Microsoft is trying to keep the desktop of old out of sight, hoping users will simply grow accustomed to the new blocky era of Windows. ...

Interesting times?

Keep searchin',

Good luck MS.

Forgetting those million users spending billion of dollars upgrading their destop computers is great behaviour.

I trust statics only if i cheated them personally. LOL

I'll let you know first week of August....that's if MS sticks to their schedule. Got Win 7 at the end of July prior to it's release that October.

Now if we got the start button & classic layout for the desktop & control panel....I might be tempted to install it on my network......

.....& if wishes were horses, I'd be Pegasus!

I don't know what they're up to, but somebody better tell them they're giving it away for free.....How so? Easy, spot the issue!

August 15th Win 8 available to MSN & Technet Subscribers(Paid for)
August 16th Microsoft Partner Network (Free, one just has to register)
August 20th M.A.P. Subscribers (paid for)

Hmmn, think I'll cancel my MAPS as I can get it for free off the Partner program.

Win 8 Release dates for I.T

"On 16th August Microsoft Software Assurance customers will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center. On the same date, all Microsoft Partner Network members will get Windows 8. On August 20th Microsoft Action Pack providers will get access to the new OS".

Isn't that a well publicised tactic to ensure Market share?

If you can't sell it, then you may as well let people have it in any case just so that your competitors are denied a sale...

A certain company has notoriously been fined for exactly that...

From an apt parallel posting from another thread:

Just compare the 'look and feel' from the two pictures in this article:

Does the Surface spat open the door for Linux?

Acer's disquiet over Surface betrays the tough position manufacturers find themselves in. If Microsoft is no longer a reliable partner, what are the alternatives for kit makers who want to survive the post-PC era? ...

... for a manufacturer to seriously market machines based on desktop Linux would have meant incurring the wrath of Microsoft.

By bypassing its partners, Microsoft has effectively reneged on its side of this arrangement, so Acer must feel freer than before...

But can Microsoft be successful with Windows 8 on a new push for Microsoft into hardware and services?...

Microsoft's radical new business plan is hidden in plain sight

... The subscription-based offerings of Office 365 are just a hint of what’s to come...

More importantly, what happens to the poor users who have signed away their lives and their data and all their business to the shackles of The "EULA"?

IT is very much what we make it,

If one looks back throughout the various threads on O/S's, one will see that is what I've been saying for close to 2 years now.

The same is going to happen with Office 2013. So far, no one has been able to find out if Office 2013 will be a full stand alone package like the previous versions. All that can be found is that it's been suggested that the desktop version will be a "lite" version, with the cloud version being the full package.

IMV, that's a dangerous move!

"Totally Bad"

Will not play DVD's & no apps in the store for this as yet. However, if one has films (i.e., .AVI files, Media Player will play them without a hitch).

Several apps (so far), will not close, even after clicking on close - Task Manager has to be used to close them - these are Music, Store, & PC Settings - haven't tested the rest yet.

Definitely no start menu. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all, corporates will give this version of Windows a miss.

I will definitely not be upgrading network to this piece of ........

...will just be running 1 copy in VM. Only the 3 versions available, Win 8/Pro/Enterprise (N Version is without media player courtesy of the EU)

Wonder what's next? Total touch screens with voice commands instead of keyboards & mice?

Edit: No problems installing boinc.

Sirius, I'm afraid you're flogging a dead horse with the Roxio issue.

I've spent thousands of hours professionally editing video and film on Macs and through the years I've noticed a couple companies to be Mac optimized. Windows users (all versions) shouldn't go near them with a ten foot pole. Obviously one is Roxio and the other one is LaCie.

[Ot]It's called Compiz and you don't buy it, its open source.

But this is not for the Linux novice as its harder to setup than installing an OS. :-)

[/ot]

Some Linux distros include nice GUI selection tools to set that up for you... Two examples are Mageia and Mandrake.

Compiz may well be, or has been, superseded by other compositing tricks... Mandriva used to offer a choice of three different systems... Sorry, I don't know what is current.

(I have the GPUs for such fun, but I see such 'eye-candy' as a gimmicky distraction!)

Happy crunchin',
Martin

Edit: Then again, I also take Linux distros "looking" good on the desktop for granted. Having a choice of desktops and then further, a choice of styles/themes within each desktop is a refreshing freedom. It is beautiful to break free of the 'corporate branding' imposed by proprietary systems.
