More operating systems are going over to some kind touch screen tablet type format.
It seems as if the developers think that `everyone uses them`
Well i have not and dont like big blobs of icons all over the screen.
I am a mouse clicky drop down menue type.
or even a keyboard and tab driven system.
Not a multitouch finger likin thingy in the house.

I don't mind touch input when it can be useful or faster than other forms of input. However, I don't see the desktop as being one of them. My monitor is normally further away than my arms are long anyway.

Exactly. It will only work with tablets and the like, and who wants one of them unless you are a show off or a nerd, or have too much money ....

LOL... just a couple of years ago, I thought that LCD/Plasma monitors will never make it to my desktop: Its only worth for notebooks, Ive said, you cant see well if you are not at the right angle and they are awfully expensive.

Well... You know... My TRC died, and the LCD was cheaper than fixing it...

Now that we have touch screen the next step is speech recognition, I mean true recognition not just command recognition... "Computer, where are my glasses?" :D

Speech recognition is pretty good these days. I can ask my, 2 year old, phone "where are my pants" and it retrieves a list of tailor shops in the area. The newer logic software such as Siri does a lot better job in understanding concepts.

The only monitor I have in my house is a 9YO CRT flatscreen. Weighs a ton. :-)

But even though I love my desktops, I never actually sit AT them. My laptop is all I use to access those machines.




As far as the changes in the desktop OSs to be more touch-friendly. That's fine with me, I'm ok with change. But they need to leave options in the OS to set it up for proper desktop use as well.

I freaking LOVE the 'Mate' desktop. It's everything Gnome3 and Unity and Win8 are not.

Well... I live in the 3rd world... But also, as I become older, "a couple years ago" tend to be much more than "2 years ago" ...

But, AFAIK, Siri is a kind of cloud service... which is good for handheld devices, but not for space ships... ;b
(And for sure, Win-whatever-number is not a good choice, Metro or not, for a space ship. LOL)

Finished playing around with Mint (as a mounted .iso in VM) & okish...

Completed installation & it's damned fast, even picking up the network without any configuration....very nice & no damned remote access issues..VERY nice.

Only problem is that it's not picking up my D-Link Sharecenters atm.... so got some reading/playing around to do.....

That's not a problem Bernie. Mine is doing the same. However, the Sharecenters are connected to the router & each have their own IP address, yet they're not being picked up whereas the other 2 rigs as well as SBS & WHS are.

Yep, and office 13 preview is now available as well.

I got windows 8 release preview installed on a spare partition in June, with office 2013 linked in today displayed via metro.

Windows 8 is starting to grow on me, especially now I linked up the office preview today.

Although ( as has been said elsewhere), this is no start button on the desktop, users can get around and get that.

I spent a number of hours getting to know the set-up and layout, and it's all starting to come together.

This reminds me of the major interface change from windows 6.22 to windows 95, when major changes occured to the GUI.

I'm not promoting windows 8, just evaluating it, but now today, I have certainly not written it off.......time will tell !

I'll start by saying I have NOT used Win8, not even within Vbox, BUT: I'm curious, you shouldn't need VT-x at all. All you should need to do is enable IO-APIC for 64-bit support before you begin to install the OS. I would think...
