Go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT and check the list. Windows 7 is the 15th release of a Windows NT-based OS.

Win 8 appears also to be an odd-numbered release according to the list!

...wth is metro doing in a server? If Win 9 is anything like these 2 offerings...it's time for me to take some time out & switch network to Linux.

If the keep with the current numbering scheme then does that mean we will have another version of Windows 95, 98, & 2000? Provided they are business that long.

I've managed without great difficulty to get my system to be able to boot

Windows 8 Consumer Preview
Windows 7 Ultimate
Linux Ubuntu 12.04 under Windows 7

Windows 7 , is my primary OS

Ubuntu, I'm using as an alternative OS, and I'm slowly getting to grips with Linux.

Windows 8 I afraid I'm not to impressed with, as it's basically windows 7 with Metro added. Metro doesn't do anything for me. Its much like media centre which I never use.

I can get most of what I require using VLC media player.

I certainly won't be splashing out for windows 8 when its officially released, having been duped previously when Vista came along.

I will stay with windows 7, until Microsoft can persuade me otherwise.

If I'm not persuaded, then Windows 8 will be dumped, when the consumer preview expires mid Jan 2013.

Windows 8 expected sometime next month. From what I can see, I think I'll only run the one copy & that in VM. There's no way I'm upgrading my network from 7.

I don't care what people say, as far as I'm concerned, it's a pig's dinner of an operating system!

Agreed Sirius. Just like Gnome3. They need to leave a simple setting on these OS's to allow them to easily be used for "advanced" purposes.


Windows 8, no start menu, no way to enable it.
Gnome 3, no desktop icons or shortcuts, no native way to enable it.

All they had to do was include a setting "classic functions" or similar
What are they thinking???

Makes me angry at Linux folk AND Microsoft folk.

I totally agree.

It would be easy to give a startmenu for higher versions fo example.
Pro and ultimate.
Metro is only useful for smartphones and ipads and alike.
But MS expects a lot of such new customers probably.

This doesn't bode well for Microsoft. Recently, I've had a couple of drives diasppear & within a short time, had several customers with the same issue.

This is one of the replies from Microsoft....

If the hard disk driver is not very compatible with Windows Vista/Windows 7, then such issue will occur. So I advise you use fltmc command to check which drivers have you installed, such as you can run fltmc filters to list to filters registered in the system".

On searching thorough the forum, I've found many others with similar issues & also come across an issue with a "known" sata problem within windows. So far, I've not found any satisfactory answer to this.

Now I'm wondering "will Win 8 suffer the same issues?"

Maybe they allowed a "classic-features" setting or similar... If they're smart they will. I'm ok with change, I just don't like being 100% locked into the changes. There always needs to be advanced options available for people that want them. Even some Android phone makers have started allowing the customer to unlock their bootloader... Same concept. Some people just want things customizable.

I'll have to get a copy and check it out. It's always important to keep up on things if you want to know how to work with everything.

I don't foresee the rise of general 128-bit processors by then. Although some processors have used a 128-bit FPU since 1970.
Also it would seem that a 128-bit address space is large enough to store all of the data on earth roughly twice.

Already tried several, but some were buggy, others not up to scratch. Will try that one out at the weekend.

I had tried that with one of the first two releases, but was no go. However it looks like their newest version is suppose to work in Windows 8. So that is good. I find the new start screen to be much slower for what I want to do. As I prefer the quick launch to pinned items in my task bar it wasn't completely awful. Except for it not going directly to the desktop on start up. Hopefully that can be fixed as well be a setting or software.

At least on dev preview we could install third party start menue.
But they want to dictate metro style.

I hope they get what they deserve.
