(And, I still don't quite understand why the forum's servers have anything to do with the scientific servers....... I think it's kind of- erm - dinosaurish that the forums have to go down for scientific maintenance)

It's a backup of the databases that they make on Tuesdays. The BOINC forums run with the same data from the BOINC database that keeps track of your credits etc. So when they make a full backup of this one, they take the databases off line (primary and secondary) to be sure that they won't corrupt anything.

Other projects may be able to do their maintenance and backups on the fly, but then they usually have large servers as well (Einstein). In retrospect, WCG goes down for a couple of hours every evening! And then there's projects which make a backup once every month or so, which means that when something does go wrong with them, you'll have lost credit and lots of posts.

I figured it had something to do with the credit system Jord. Just too bad they can't "disconnect" the forums from the system, during the outage.

And on that note, I try to remind myself we are here to help them, not the other way around.

I finally managed to get info regarding this last outage via the Lunatics
web site. I was surprised that none of the Boinc sites had any info at all
regarding Seti being down? Berkeley. edu made no mention of seti having any
problems, to my mind this was a very poor public relation failure.
Berkeley University should be our first point of contact when looking for info
regarding any problems with the seti project. So, can our project leaders use
this universities web site as a means of keeping us all in touch when the seti/
boinc systems go down.

You will be waiting forever. It wouldn't have done any good anyway. Very short notice to the lab before the normal outage. The notice tab can't be updated then because the servers are off line. Yes the 90 minutes after the normal outage and the power problem, but how many of you would have requested work successfully in that 90 minutes? With the new request system 7.xx, it can be days between requests for the vast majority of participants. So the notice on the home page -- home page is reachable in the normal outage -- was the best way to get the word out.

MORAL --- Always check the home page first!

It turns out that there are two mechanisms for sending "Notices" to the BOINC client. Apparently one of them has stopped working, or never worked for us. I've enabled the other mechanism. Next time your BOINC client gets an update from SETI@home you'll see some old messages. If we fix the broken mechanism you might start seeing double messages, at which point I'll disable one.

See the word "HOME" in the upper left. Press it. It will take you to the notice posted at 17:11:12 UTC that there was an outage in the works. That notice was up from then until the system was taken down. And it was up all the time the maintenance outage was going on.

Nope. There is no "HOME" button when the website is offline. I wasn't talking about maintenance, I was talking about the power outage yesterday and the day before. No power = no website (as the news item on the homepage states). And I don't have the time to hit the SETI homepage every hour in the hopes of catching updates like that. As such I didn't have a cached page to stare at either. Once I noticed work units stacking up I went to investigate, but found no website. Wondered if SETI@home went down the same path as the Allen Telescope Array. I stumbled upon the answer at BOINCstats - and they had used the Google cached page of SETI@home to get the update. Because the website was down. Because there was no power. Hence no "HOME" button.

Normally you should look here if you can't reach any projects home page.

However because of this, which isn't normal, it wouldn't have done you much good.

Point is there was about 5 hours notice.

LOL. I've now got one copy of the notice about the original (unscheduled) outage, dated 18 May, but nothing about the second outage yet.

There's a page about the classic version: Screensaver graphics explained - that should get you started.

Ever since the major power outage, all the work units I'm getting are only for my video card: SETI@home Enhanced 6.10 (cuda_fermi). Why am I not getting any for my CPU to crunch???
