Based on income made got some quotes for premiums that were affordable with the gov subs.

What cost of living did you use to decide they were affordable?

I'd actually like to see the numbers because I'd like to know what people in other countries consider affordable. I suspect there are some major differences in what things cost and what taxes are imposed.

For low income seemed affordable for minimum coverage.
You can always get your cheap drugs at Walmart.

Taking the first few, not flagged for delete, we have $2300, $3600, $3150, $4505, $2995, $2895, $4000 as rent in the area. Using the lowest $2300 times 40 gives an annual income of $92,000.00. Put that number in the Covered California website with the 94122 zip and we get ZERO in subsidies.
The platinum 90 plan goes for $1059 a month. The bronze 60 at $545 a month.

You have to do some math for yourself to see how much you will pay in copays and deductibles to see which plan is less for you, but the smart ones did it to come up with platinum 90 rates, so I will continue with that number.

First do you think $1059 a month is "Affordable"? AFIK Canadian and American dollars are about on par.

Now the math, rent is 30% of your income. You are smart and are putting 10% away towards retirement via 401(k) deduction. Your utilities, cable, electricity, phones, internet, gas, water, sewer run another 10%. This new insurance bill is 15%. Since this a a good area, lease a couple cars and pay insurance on them, another 10%. That is 75% of you income spent before you see it. This person who is earning 8 times the poverty line likely can do it without having to eat dog food. Also at 8x the poverty line, their company 99% offers free medical so Obamacare is a non-issue.

Try that calculation with a person at 4 times the poverty level, the number where subsidies on Obamacare end. Don't even bother letting them live in San Francisco, not possible, try something in barrio of Oakland.

Then when you have done that, try is again with someone at the poverty line. Note there that they will be in "Section 8" housing, which is government pays your rent, and they will have "SNAP" so the government pays for your food. Your birthright as an American, free house, food and now medical care.

What I wonder about are the people who are actually homeless. They don't have any income so they don't fill out a tax return, no earned income tax credit welfare. How are they going to pay their Obama tax for not buying their Obamacare plan? How is the IRS going to extract that tax money from them? Have agents on every street corner to take part of every bums begging income?

I'm sure there are lots of people living in San Fran making 20K - 30K per year.
Shared accommodations, own a house, whatever.
They don't qualify for free coverage but still get a break under Obamacare.
This really is meant to help the poorest Americans.

Try running the numbers in a poor area of California, like Stockton, CA.

Try running the numbers at the 4x federal poverty rate, right where the subsidies quit.

Try running the numbers in a more normal area, say Long Beach, CA.

Craigslist will give you some numbers on cost of housing for those areas. See what Obama really wants for a change with your own eyes.

I know the subsidies only help the poor. What you don't seem to understand is it makes poor out the bottom of the middle class and really only helps the uber-poor.

The numbers people think of for the differences between the classes were true in the 1960's but that was before the Johnson era Vietnam war tax called inflation took hold.

The income disparity is so large in America, you can't make people pay 100% of the cost at incomes less than the median. If it was funded as medicare is, with no upper limit on the premium, er tax, then you could offer much better discounts to the people who do need help getting insurance. (You do realize that if it was affordable to an income level they, majority, would buy it anyway?)

Obamacare as it is written throws a fair segment of the populace under the bus.

Unfortunately the bean counter in me sees only a small fraction of the people buying into Obamacare, those primarily being the already sick. The rest will pay the tax which is less than one months premium. This will result in a huge cost to the government to keep the Obamacare plans afloat, more that the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. Just what the government needs when the Medicare and Social Security trust funds are going bust in your lifetime.
