With a few fresh faces here in the Politics forum, now is a good time to reiterate that the forum rules here are more relaxed than in other areas of the message board.

As I'm sure you all know, discussing sensitive issues such as religion or politics can cause intense disagreements and emotions. I would strongly encourage anyone that is getting upset or angry to walk away before posting things that might cause more tension. If necessary, write a response but don't post it, then wait a few hours and decide if the post is a good idea.

Try to remember that discourse is very important, and though we might not agree with what we read on the board, we should be respectful of other's views (even if they're wrong! :-))

I fully expect issues to arise in this part of the boards, and I fully expect a few verbal brawls. All we ask is to keep it "above the belt".

Thank you.

As a reminder, racially offensive words are not allowed on these forums, even in Politics. Posts containing racially offensive words will be removed.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I agree Fred, there's better ways to make your point than to use certain offensive words.

Regarding off-topic posts, I have instructed my moderators to allow conversations to wander like all good conversations do. If a thread owner does not wish to see off-topic posts, please state the rules for the thread in the opening post. Note that if a subject is mentioned by the thread originator and someone else comments on it, this is then considered "on topic".

Complaining in threads that posts are off topic only serves to further drag the conversation off topic. Please Red-X any posts that may be off topic for consideration, and if found off topic (as stated in the opening post's rules), it will be removed.

In light of recent events, may I remind everybody that if you have issues with moderation decisions, the place to appeal is to email the mod team.

The modlist contact email is visible in the 'Rules' section at the left, each time you post, about half way down.

Thank you.

There isn't any rota for being on duty apparently which is surprising to me, but it is a voluntary position.

Exactly it is a voluntary position and and unless you had at least 2 mods per time zone how else could it work.

Having said that, they will not take any notice of reports that "I just don't like him or her". You can all see the rules on the left when making a post, if you genuinely think that a post breaks one of those rules, then say which one.

Personally I don't believe it is for anyone but a mod to say what they will or will not take notice of.

Speaking for myself I will read all Red X posts and act accordingly, please do not put people off using the Red X

But ES99 is right, the Red X system is there for a good reason, and it would be very helpful if it was used responsibly and only when necessary.

Yes she is.

Just a reminder as there seems to be some confusion in the policy regarding swearing:

*) Swear words need to be self censored. (&%(^##^ is perfectlly accpetable as is f***, f**k, f-ing, and WTF. If you do not censor yourself, we will be forced to do it for you. Recidivous offenders will find themselves banned from posting. Bannishments may increase in length of time for repeat offenders at the request of the Mods. This applies to swearing in foreign languages as well.

Do try to keep it clean and to a minimum though. Exercise your cunning linguistics by showing off a better way to express yourself.

As always, if there are any questions regarding moderation, bring all concerns to the Modlist at set_moderators at ssl.berkeley.edu. You can always PM me or email me at setiforums at ssl.berkeley.edu.
