Hi,

Maybe a stupid question, but is it possible that Boinc runs even when the PC is in sleep mode? I don't hear the harddisk or fans anymore, but are the processors still working?

I ask this because it doesn't really change my average in the stats.

Greetings from Belgium !

When in sleep mode the CPU is effectively paused until it receives an external interrupt.

this can also cause your WU's to fail or at least take a much long time to complete than expected. IF you intend to crunch while you are away from your PC just set it to never sleep

But doesn't this effect the lifetime of my harddisk and/or processors?

My SUN M20 WS has been working 24/7 since January 2008, except on holyday vacations, and it has no problems, except a failed USB port which I used for my keyboard. But I have 6 of them, plus 2 Firewire ports.

Processors not if they are properly cooled, I have a 10 year old AthlonXP still crunching 24/7, I think that's more than long enough.

Hard drives... well that depends, turning them of for the night will very probably extend their lifetime, turnung them on and off 10 or more times a day with automatic standy-by probably not, my guess would be even, that that will shorten their lifetime, they usually fail when spinning up. And of course watch the temperatures of the hard drives as well and stay at least 10°C below their max, than they should be OK.

The dual P3 that I used when I first signed up to Seti in 1999 still works, not crunching any more but thats because of ineffiency when compared to new computers. It is now used as an oscilloscope/recording multimeter in my w/shop. It might be using a newer HDD, but otherwise is as used then.
