Hmm, in case haven't tried it yet, reboot the computer.

Uninstall BOINC, delete the "c:\program files\boinc"-directory and sub-directories.
Re-name the "c:\programdata\boinc" to something else.
Re-install BOINC.

Try starting BOINC, if it does not start even after a re-boot, do:
Check if BOINC.exe is running in Task Manager.
If not, open-up a cmd-window.
In this window, cd to "\program files\boinc"
Now run boinc.exe in this window.
There's now two possibilities, BOINC will start correctly, or you'll get an error-message. Post the error-message here so hopefully someone can suggest on further action.

Installing the BOINC-DATA Map on another Harddrive or partition, also
works OK.

This worked. Thanks! (BOINC 6.12.34)

No WUs, though. It destroyed 'em. ;'(

BOINC 7.0.25 did it again! I installed it on my older computer. BOINC Manager doesn't show up, but boinc.exe will run properly, if I start it from the command line.

So, when will they fix BOINC Manager issues in BOINC 7?

They can't fix them untill people report them. You're the first to post about this problem.

Did you try to install it in "Protected application execution" mode?
From the release notes.
"To run BOINC invisibly, choose the "Protected application execution" option, then delete the BOINC shortcut from the Start/Programs/BOINC and Start/Programs/Startup menus (locate BOINC in each menu, right-click, select Delete). You can still run the BOINC Manager by going to C:\Program Files\BOINC and double-clicking on boincmgr.exe"
And if you did install it in PAE mode, you won't be able to use your video card to process any work.

Where should I report them?

It is weird if I'm the only one having this problem...

No, I don't think so. I used the default settings, as always. Last time I checked, "Protected application execution mode" wasn't the default setting during installation...

BOINC 7.0.23? Huh? They don't even accept test results for BOINC 7.0.25!

Where should I report them?

How to report bugs

In addition to reporting negative test results, we strongly encourage you to submit detailed bug reports.

If you're not sure whether something is a problem, post to the boinc_alpha@… email list.

If a problem persists across multiple releases, you can submit bug reports to the BOINC bug database, or send email to the relevant area owner.

No idea that the problem is...

But, while it probably won't work, you could try uninstalling & re-installing BOINC v7 as a service, "protected mode" during installation, and see if it's working after a re-boot.

If it's working as a service, try uninstalling & re-installing as non-service mode afterwards and see if it's still working.

BTW, one other thing you can try is to run boincmgr.exe also from the command-line, for some programs this will show error-messages that isn't showing-up otherwise, but not sure if this is the case with BOINC...

That's because 7.0.24, 7.0.25, 7.0.26 and 7.0.27 aren't development versions. They're release versions.

Release versions start with a disclaimer as to it being a development version in the messages. The last versions of 7.0 have all been release clients, not alpha clients. The developers express requested any late bugs to be reported through the alpha email list, to quickly determine if there were show stoppers.

I don't know if this has to do with BOINC 7.0.25 but there is an oddity that has occured a lot more since I put in the release. On astropulse, the remaining time increases as it runs. The total time involved goes well over 100 hrs. I have gotten to suspending the running for awhile and later resuming it. Then the total hours collapse down and it seems to run fine for awhile. Already 1 astropulse task has gone passed deadline & I may have another do so. I've been scanning the boards for any discussion of this and found none. Has anyone run into this before?

See the Astropulse 6.01 WU stuck at 66.172% for a day thread. It seems a few systems get stuck that way with the stock 6.01 Windows build, no good indication of what the common factor is yet.

Message 1254473 - Posted: 2 Jul 2012, 8:51:22 UTC

I have this same problem. I uninstalled some Boinc 6.x version and tried to install 7.0.28. I had some weird problems with trying to get the preferences to sync with account manager so I thought it's time to update.

I have completely uninstalled 6.x, deleted both boinc folders from program files and programdata and also have tried to delete reg keys as adviced in here http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=490 . Also have restarted computer several times but it doesn't help. Now when I try to launch boinc nothing will happen and I can just see that boincmgr.exe is running in task manager but I can't get any window or tray icon appear in task bar.

Any help?

I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

The problem is with the Finnish translation in BOINC Manager. So you can just reinstall BOINC 7.0.28, then go to the registry, to key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager
Then change Language Selection from 0 to 1. Next (re)start BOINC Manager.

It'll now work, as long as you do not select the Finnish language.
A fix for this was in 7.0.30, but that version's been retracted due to another big bug. The developers expect to have 7.0.31 out for testing tonight.

I don't have such key in the registry. Under BOINC Manager I only have "(Default) REG_SZ"

I don't have such key in the registry. Under BOINC Manager I only have "(Default) REG_SZ"

Not sure what is going on there, but it sounds like it might be a permission issue. If BOINC Manager isn't being allowed to create its standard registry entries it may not have the correct permissions to run the client.

Maybe try running it as administrator to see how it responds.

This is the beginning of mine, there is more but mainly for "Width"= and "Height"= of different dialog windows.

You can create .reg file from this (the selected Language in my BOINC Manager 6.10.58 is English):
(if BOINC Manager starts successfully I think it will create the remaining keys/values)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager]

Message 1255189 - Posted: 3 Jul 2012, 23:41:56 UTC

I tried the 7.0.25 version on my Linux (Debian) system. It took a lot of ancillary library upgrades to satisfy the link-load dependencies. Eventually got boincmgr to load and run and it pulled in work units and began processing them and reporting completed ones.
However, all the library changes resulted in other applications being "broken" and needing to upgrade to unstable release versions. That proved to be a slippery (recursive) slope. I abandoned the 7.0.25 version and, following the release notes cautions, reverted back to the 6.12.34 version.
I did not have any problem with Boinc 7.0.25, per se, but it did not play well with other system requirements, so don't take this post as a "boinc bug." Other Linux releases may respond differently. YMMV.

I went back to version 6.12.34 (x64) because it works. This version also succesfully creates the registry entrys.
