Wow

I am overwhelmed, and thanks to all well wishers.

I hope to start the chemo next Monday orr Tuesday, which, I hope, includes bone marrow stem cell treatment of my own stem cells. Ten years ago this was all new.

Kidneys behaving and look like returning to some normalite in about two weeks.

Again, thanks for the well wishers.

John

We're all thinking of you John. Get well soon. xx

John, there are several ways of getting out of hospital:

Good behaviour, doing what the nurses and doctors tell you, when they tell you, and being friendly to them all. (This can involved a degree of "controlled flirting" with selected female staff members - good luck on finding the right ones :-) )

Bad behaviour, not doing what you are told and generally upsetting the staff; this doesn't always work as planned because they know how to smile sweetly and make you scream.

There is at least one more, but we aren't going there are we.

Just had a PM from my brother, after he set up a profile but needs some credit.

The day gets better and betterer ...

Also just spoke to our daughter, who returned to London.

So you have a little Myeloma, huh. I wish you well. Autologous stem cell replacement is an excellent treatment and has come a long way in the last 10-15 years. The only bad part, for everyone other than you, is the smell. Stem cells are preserved in glycerine and frozen with liquid nitrogen. When the cells are returned to you the Glycerine comes along for the ride. That smell is something to behold.

I'm betting you'll do fine. Glad to have you back!!!

Is that the real reason I will be isolated for 4 weeks in a isolation room?

Actually the real reason is that they are going to harvest stem cells after pumping you full of neupogen. This act creates immature WBC(White Blood Cells) and quite a few stem cells in the act. Once they harvest a sufficient quatity they'll Medically burn off your bone marrow. which means you'll have no immune system for a while. You'll also Have no RBC's(Red Blood Cells) or Platelets being produced. Which also means you'll probably be receiving routine transfusions of WBC poor blood and Platelets. You'll probably not like how you feel at that point.

Once they have established that your bone marrow isn't producing cells for a short period of time(days to a week or more) then they'll give your stem cells back to you. Over several weeks the Stem Cells will reestablish themselves in your Marrow and start producing "Normal" blood cells free of the disease. It may take some time to recover completely from this.

I really think you are in good hands. You're going to do great.

/edit
I forgot to mention that while you are immune suppressed they'll be pumping you full of antiviral, antibiotics and antifungal meds to keep the nasties away.

No worries you'll do fine

There is one guy just been through the stem cell treatment. Says, desite feeling bad and sleeping 14 hours a day, he reccomends the treatment. Average longterm survivl is considerably better than standard chemo.
