I've noticed over the last few weeks that first one, now both of the tabs at the top of BOINC manager changed from saying "seti_at_home" to "astropulse_v6". I understand about the name change, I think (although I didn't see any news item about the release of Astropulse for OS X specifically, only Windows & Linux), but now that both tabs read "astropulse_v6" the screensaver graphics never start up. I see the BOINC logo and the phrase "Starting screensaver graphics, please wait..." but it never goes farther. Or further. I note that the screensaver issue didn't seem to appear until both application tabs had changed.

I have tried restarting my system and re-installing BOINC manager (which has resolved the occasional glitch in the past), but I see no change. Astropulse does appear to be running, it even appears that the screensaver module starts, but graphics never load. That the problem seemed to appear only when both applications changed to Astropulse would seem to imply an Astropulse issue.

Thanks,

Jeff

OK, this is interesting, I guess I don't quite understand the relationship among the applications.

Now, one of the tabs reads "setiathome_enhanced" and the screensaver is working. Is it that there is no screensaver graphics for Astropulse? Can someone explain for me the difference between the two and their relationship? Why did both tabs read "astropulse_v6" before? Thanks.

Seti's tasks are either Seti Enhanced Multibeam, or Astropulse.
The Seti Enhanced Multibeam tasks are the small ones, at 367KB, checked for narrow band pulses.
The Astropulse tasks are large, at 8MB a piece, checked for wide band pulses.

Check http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ap_faq.php and http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/about_seti/about_seti_at_home_1.html for more information.

Howdy,

I'm having the same problem, Jeff. I just started my first Astropulse v6 WU's on the OS X 10.6.8. Everything is progressing nicely, except for the lack of graphics in the BOINC Manager and for the screensaver. I'm wondering if these WU's are going to error out if that connection isn't made.

It seems there are a few threads here on this issue. Hoping for an answer and a fix.

If the work units are processing then everything is working fine. The screensaver is just a visual representation and has nothing to do with the actual processing your system is doing. (technically it will process more if you disable the screensaver outright.)

So am I correct in concluding that Astropulse has no screensaver?

I have never used the screensavers so I don't really know for sure

But astropulse is processed differently than the other tasks, and therefor probably will not work with the boinc/seti screensaver.

(I've mentioned to others around here lately that I feel some better working *bling* like screensavers and other things would help encourage people to try out BOINC and seti@home. Linux users don't even get a screensaver (which is beyond me why...))

The project developers are too busy however to work on bling. The main goals are to make the apps process the data properly and efficiently. I see people almost daily asking about the cool screensaver, but fact is you can live without it.

Some people around here run BOINC on machines without graphical desktops or even monitors. The bling is just for show.

To those not seeing screensaver graphics: please check your console log using the Console utility and report error messages like:

Process creation (../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setigraphics_6.05_powerpc-apple-darwin) failed: errno=13

per my post in the Seti@Home Screensaver Graphics thread.
