Gosh WinterKnight, you should have insisted (working for NATO) to get the full set of holidays observed by each nation of NATO -- and to work French hours. Would have been a nice part time gig. When I was working back at Yale in the mid 1970's in admin positions I found that the amount of time off was almost French like. 1) 37.5 hour work week 2) 14 paid holidays 3) 22 days paid vacation 4) 20 days paid sick leave 5) 2 week paid shut down during semester break. I was working doing the admin stuff for a small electronics design lab, which also included maintaining electronics parts inventory for the students and grad students. My boss (who was a faculty member) liked the idea of me 'bonding' with the grad students in physics and electronics and computer science. So he endorsed me playing in the Grad student volleyball and softball leagues -- which happened during the afternoons. I figured that made me a paid athlete <g> The job didn't pay all that well, but I didn't work that hard either. |

Back in the early 50's when I was a wee lad, I can remember my parents complaining when they started making 3 day weekends out of holidays. Totally agree. But in my case it is because after working as an instructor for NATO I got very few public/bank holidays. The logic at the NATO training establishment was that most courses were multi-national with each nation having its own set of holidays. And as all courses were modular with some modules as short as 5 working days. If a student from one nation had a public holiday then that student couldn't be expected to miss a day of instruction, so rather than making that student work on their holiday, all students had to have that holiday. Therefore if there no students on that day then the instructor could also have a holiday. Also within NATO, to make it fair for the personnel working at NATO establishments, for all member nations each nation is granted the same number of public holidays. This means a increase for several nations including the UK, so we had a extra holidays on the Queen's official birthday and Rememberence day. It works out, depending on the dates of the moveable feasts, that there are very few weeks between Easter and the end of May (Canada Victoria day), when there isn't a public holiday somewhere in NATO. And then it's only a few weeks till the 1st of July Canada day and the 4th ... |

WOW!!! now now my son, no softly softly here...this is the politics thread after all where anything goes or happens..... :) Anyway, you're wrong Soft has posted in threads with me before & her posts have often been interesting..... Personally, I think that their minds have become so lacklustre that they can no longer think outside the beaurocratic box & still think that we are dumb enough to believe their utterings as gospel. |

Muppets at work "Mr McWilliams said he was not advocating scrapping the holidays but spreading them out." but but but....wouldn't they still cost a loss of £18 billion? What planet this muppet think he's living on? Someone had better tell him that April 1st was 8 days ago :) |
