Message 1213483 - Posted: 3 Apr 2012, 4:38:48 UTC

A computer with a 123-YW-E175-rx motherboard - an EVGA 750i - started acting wonky. I swapped out everything until I found messages at the EVGA website of other people having the same problems with their 750i motherboards. I have another 123-YW-E175-rx that has started acting strange. Any advice on a replacement 775 motherboard with slots for two gtx 295s that I can run 24/7 with SETI? All I'm finding are vintage motherboards - need some advice on the best one. I do not overclock. Thanks for a reply.

If you can still find a S775 mobo that will fit your requirements it will likely be 2nd hand but stay right away from anything that doesn't use an Intel chipset.

My ASUS P5K-E WIFI Deluxe has given me 6yrs of reliability with 2x 9800GT's but maybe you should consider moving to a S1155 mobo if you can't find a suitable S775 one.

Cheers.

I found NIB Asus P5K for $88 plus $18 shipping BIN on eBay, and a used ASUS P5K-E WIFI that is up to $20. Will be looking at both. I have a Q9550 and two Q9400 that I would like to keep using before considering Ivy Bridge. Still looking for information about Ivy Bridge on-board GPU and how it would work with a GTX 295. Thanks for the advice. Sirguy

Well both those should do the job for you so long as there's nothing wrong with them.

I also have an i5 2500K sitting in an Asrock Z68 Extreme4 with 2x 9800GT's also and the on die video with the latest Lunatics build using AVX has drop my average AP crunching times down from 6.25hrs doing v505's without AVX to 5.75hrs doing v6's with AVX.

Cheers.

I have an ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo which uses the Intel P45 and ICH10R chipsets which are as good as it gets for 775. The other good thing is the two x16 PCIe slots are 3 slots apart rather than 2 so you get better cooling.

It might be work looking out for an x48 based board as there can have 2 x x16 PCIe-16 slots rather than 2 x x8 PCIe-16 slots.

I would second the P5Q, I have a Q9450 on a P5Q Deluxe (have had a couple, sold the other one), it has 3 pcie slots (x8, x8, x4), but really only 2 useable. I only have a single card in mine, though.

Seeing a socket "775" and "SLI" being used in the same sentence as "vintage", makes me feel old. :-)

Ive still got 478s and 775s in use around here. Nothing with SLI though

Youngster! I'll match your 478s and raise you a Slot 2 motherboard.

BTW as far as I know there are no motherboards with Intel P45/P35 chipsets that have SLI support. Both the P5K and P5Q only have Crossfire.

But we don't run as "SLi" with these s775 boards, the 2nd card runs as a physics card. ;)

I still have a few old s7's here.

Cheers.

I am still running a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3P as my main system. Which does the PCIe x16 or x8/x8 dance.

I had one of those in 1998, a P2-350. Also had a p75 in 1995 (cant remember the layout but it was before the slot2 cartridge setup)
We could go on and on. I also had a commodore64 in the early 90's, and hell the first computers I used at school were monochrome screen apple IIs, but that's getting in the wayback machine. I'm sure some people around here were familiar with much older stuff even.

But I stand by my first statement. a socket 775 is NOT vintage. :-)

My GA-8knxp just died last year. It was a sad day after almost 10 years of faithful service

It look`s like i have a `vintage` XFX 780i with three 16x slots and a 3.6 P4 helping to keep the house warm.
The pcie slots are double spaced, so thats not to bad.
though the board/cpu is a power hungry git even when not running anything.
It has only got a 9500 GT in it atm, some day i hope to put some ATI 7xxx cards in it,
I have got it, it works so i will use it,
By the way, what is it that is `wrong` with the NV chipset, just so i know what to expect or look for if something go`s pop ??

The question was - what's wrong with the NV chip? I have two motherboards with Nvidia chips - 123-YW-E175 RX. One stopped working - would not go to bios. Replaced everything on the board one component at a time. Tried disconnecting everything. Tried removing motherboard and running it on a static bag on top of a cardboard box. Then, I replaced the board and every part I had removed worked on the next motherboard - a 123-YW-E175 RX, that now starts "going to sleep" when I am away. I have to restart it to get it going again. I've tried everything to get it to stay awake. In the meantime, every board with an Intel chipset works perfectly. The broken 123-YW-E175 is sitting in my trashcan - it looks too good to throw away - too broken to use! That's why I'm not looking for an NVIDIA chip.

What is "wrong" is their extremely high failure rate so you better treat that mobo that you have with extreme care. ;)

Cheers.

Ok, thanks for the warning on that.
Though i made my own 80mm fan adapter box for the `north bridge` because i gets stupid hot with the screeeming little standard fan,
my fix took 20c off its temp`s. it now runs in the 40`s and is quiet.
