And for some really slimy diabetic inducing Marketing stuff: Tax on sugary drinks passed in first US city The US city of Berkeley in California has voted in favour of a tax on sugary drinks, the first specifically targeting soda consumption in the US. However, nearby San Francisco has not backed a similar measure. Although final votes were still being counted, Berkeley - which required a simple 50% majority - backed the measure with the support of about two-thirds of voters. San Francisco failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed. The vote was being watched across the US, in large part because the drinks industry reportedly spent millions of dollars fighting the taxes... Also, we are what we drink... One good thing about Berkeley passing 'If It Tastes Good - Tax It': Or that is only an overly gentle response to the cruelty of the food-slime being deceptively peddled? There is this little sequence that personally I believe should turn everyone's stomachs cold: Pub chain criticised for calorific doughnut burger "Family friendly" pub chain Hungry Horse has been criticised for creating a burger containing nearly 100% of a woman's recommended daily calorie intake at 1,996 calories. The Double Donut burger consists of two beef burgers topped with cheese, four bacon rashers and BBQ sauce, sandwiched between two glazed ring-doughnuts. Critics called it irresponsible, dubbing it "a heart attack on a plate". Hungry Horse said it was catering for a variety of tastes... ... Advertised with the tag line "So Wrong It's Right"... ... Mel Wakeman, senior lecturer in Applied Physiology at Birmingham City University, said: "To me, this is simply ludicrous and irresponsible. I am no killjoy but why is this sort of food available?"... Call to banish fruit juice from recommended five a day Fruit juice should be removed from the recommended list of healthy things to eat daily because it is confusing... ... Action on Sugar found many children's juices contain at least six teaspoons of sugar - more than cola - and come in cartons larger than recommended... One in 10 sausages 'carries risk of hepatitis E virus' One in 10 sausages and processed pork meat products in England and Wales could cause hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection if undercooked... There has been an "abrupt rise" in the number of cases in England and Wales as people do not realise the risk... ... He said the virus occurred in the animal and in the blood system and warned it would continue unless there was a "big change" in animal practices, such as introducing different hygiene measures... ... In Asia and Africa, hepatitis E is more commonly transmitted by contaminated drinking water. And add also that "little extra" as children 'grow up'?... Ad Breakdown: Sex and the e-cigarette E-cigarettes are to be shown in a UK TV advert for the first time on ITV on Monday. And it's deemed too sexual to air before 9pm... ... "The old adverts were using sex to sell cigarettes to young people, but the VIP ad is just crude,"... To my view, all very slimy and cruel and deceptive. Obesity 'costing same as smoking' The worldwide cost of obesity is about the same as smoking or armed conflict and greater than both alcoholism and climate change, research has suggested. The McKinsey Global Institute said it cost £1.3tn, or 2.8% of annual economic activity - it cost the UK £47bn. ... That might be the monetary cost. What costs for the misery? Unfortunately, what we are seeing is the freedom for overly powerful corporations (and others) to use widespread Marketing coercion and market manipulation that denies freedom for the victims. So, who's freedom? For example: We still have the stark example of how this killer is still being ruthlessly Marketed: The battle for control of the cigarette packet Governments and tobacco companies are engaged in a struggle over territory - a few square inches on the front and back of cigarette packets. But as health warnings grow ever bigger and gorier, the companies have been finding other ways to give their products a distinctive look and feel. WARNING: some readers may find the images below disturbing... (I'd relabel that warning to that all readers should find the article and images disturbing.) Note that we have long known how the cigarette format has been manipulated and formulated to be especially addictive. It really does alter the victims minds, physically. Is that the freedom for unwitting victims to continue to be abused? The Marketing coercion is clearly working, still. Despite all that we know, how can anyone rationally choose such misery for themselves and for those around them? A second example is the unbelievable volume of FUD sponsored by the Fossil Fuels industry that has polluted the issues about Global Warming and Climate Change into the oblivion of a quagmire... From what I can see, you can't easily get more opportunistically slimy and contradictory as this: Why do Americans love ancient grains? In the past five years there has been an explosion in popularity of so-called "ancient grains" in the American food market. There is no comprehensive list of "ancient" grains, but the category is generally agreed to include amaranth, barley, bulgur, buckwheat, kamut, millet, spelt, teff and quinoa. Many of these grains - Bolivian quinoa and Ethiopian teff, for example - have been planted and harvested in the same way for thousands of years. "It's been a positive perfect storm for these ancient grains," says Cynthia Harriman, director of food and nutritional strategies at the non-profit organisation, the Whole Grain Council. "They fit with our desire to look for a super-food, a magic bullet we should be eating," she says. Ancient grains are perceived as the opposite of modern wheat, which is the descendant of three ancient strains of wheat - spelt, einkorn and emmer - and often heavily refined. They are seen as more healthy, more natural and better for us, providing more vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein than modern wheat - partly because they are rarely eaten in processed form... ... "It's a revolt against processed food. It's the opposite of modern."... ... The company has announced it will be launching a new line of its successful breakfast cereal, Cheerios, with ancient grains next year. "It's a way to bring this product into the mainstream," Cunningham says. "Consumers may feel that the barrier to eating ancient grains is that they're not convenient, so we figured a way to deliver them in a bowl of cereal." But this will also mean including five times as much sugar as in the original Cheerios recipe - 5g of sugar per 28g serving, instead of just 1g - though, as Cunningham points out, about half as much as in the company's best seller, Honey Nut Cheerios. "We feel great about the health profile of this Cheerios," he says. But the addition of sugar and heavy processing has led some to accuse companies like General Mills of cynically making money from the "health halo" surrounding ancient grains. "Like any grain they can be used in a healthy or unhealthy way," says Hemi Weingarten, founder and CEO of the food blog site Fooducate. "The gullible consumer is going to buy more if it sounds healthy," he says... I'll have to admit to being impressed by the Marketing jingoism! So... After far far too long knowing the unpleasant bad health effects, finally: Car smoke ban 'to start in October' Smoking in cars with children will be banned in England, under new laws put forward by the government. The regulations laid before Parliament propose banning smoking in cars containing under 18s... There is also the smoking distraction from driving that has proved fatally too dangerous too many times...
