Gary, LOL, trying to make logical and fair changes through legal means is by definition subversive.

Subversive:
Noun:
A radical supporter of political or social revolution
Adjective
In opposition to a civil authority or government

What's a little difference between a noun an and adjective?

I am against fraud.

And feeding that stuff to us as hamburger is fraud. As long as the gatoraid is pink, I am sure the USDA would have no trouble including it in your "beef".

I hate to even imagine what is actually i gatoraide.

Surprising this thread hasn't brought up the horse meat that was found in "beef".

Should you be worried about slime.

Apparently 46% of food infections are caused by leafy greens.

Most deaths are caused by poultry.

Beyond the hormone injections,anti-biotic resistant bacteria and viral spread potential of the "slimes",
virtually anything commercially produced can contain genetically altered meat/produce which often creates NEW viruses that come with the new DNA structures.

I am developing a very healthy concern over all of it. More so in larger productions.

Very apt...

Just one little recent snippet:

Findus beef lasagne contained up to 100% horsemeat, FSA says

... Findus said in a statement: "We understand this is a very sensitive subject for consumers and we would like to reassure you we have reacted immediately. We do not believe this to be a food safety issue. ...

So... According to that, all ok then?... All a game of Marketing denial and the customers be damned?

Horsemeat laganga? Yummy!

As long as they don't start marketing kitty lasagna...LOL.

Oh, and I suppose somebody will get busy and post me an article about kitties being considered a delicacy somewhere......

Given, other cultures are not the US market.

Until then, gimme horsemeat, bison meat, cow intestines properly and with prudent sanitary considerations, and most any other 'what God gave us such creatures to eat' for my dinner.
I don't think he intended companion animals like cats and dogs to be part of our food chain, although some have made them so, and other other side of the coin, a few have adopted cows and pigs to be pets.

As it stands now, if someone in genetic engineering decides that some Cat DNA encoding is beneficial to cows or pigs, it could very easily be moved to the
food chain.

No surprise on how this one is developing, nor for what is beginning to be found now that a few checks are being made:

Horsemeat scandal: Government 'flat-footed' over crisis

... called for greater testing of products to reassure people there is not a threat to human health.

Food minister David Heath said three horses, slaughtered in the UK, had tested positive for bute and may have entered the food chain in France.

Responding to an urgent question in the House, he said tests for traces of bute in Findus products were negative.

A total of eight horse carcasses tested positive for phenylbutazone (bute), an anti-inflammatory painkiller used to treat horses which can in rare cases by harmful to humans if ingested. ...

... "It seems improbable that individuals prepared to pass horsemeat off as beef illegally are applying the high hygiene standards rightly required in the food production industry...

Unsavory stuff?

What surprises me is that NO retailer had apparently been testing the food they had been supplying to the public.

One, and only one retailer in the UK, the CO-OP, has said that they and only they must be responsible for supplying the public with food no one had any idea what it was and where it came from.

Personally I have no idea where to buy my food but what it actually means is no one in Europe, perhaps anywhere has any idea what they are actually eating!!!

What surprises me is that NO retailer had apparently been testing the food they had been supplying to the public.

Why would they? Should they distrust their suppliers? If so just how much testing is needed? How many different things should they test for? What level constitutes pass/fail for each item they test for? How much product should they test? How often should they test? How fast should they get results? Isn't this really the job for a government department so that uniform standards are enforced?

most of the government agencies responsible are appointed at the recommendations from lobbyists from those that would like to continue to feed you stuff you really do not want to know.. but you should trust because they have sunshine and singing birds in their advertisements. They are often there to serve the industry over the consumer. After all if it is bad for sales it must be bad for everyone.

Until the consumers stand up and say no more, the commercial food chain is russian roulette.

Buy as much local from people you know and trust as possible. Ask questions.. and listen between the lines. "We do not use ammoniated products in our ground beef" means we may have genetically engineered products of unknown origins in with gods know what and loaded with hormones and animal antibiotics that were treated with citric acid instead of ammonia at the factory that processes the beef-byproducts so we can slide them back into it.

From an email I received today :)

Let's go, Tesco

In the UK, some supermarkets have admitted that there is horse meat in their home cook burgers.
Even places like Burger King have had to admit that there are small amounts of horse meat in their burgers.
Tesco is a big supermarket chain in the UK.

Within hours of the news that Tesco's 'all beef hamburgers' contained 30% horse meat, these quips hit the internet

“I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse..... I guess Tesco just listened!

Anyone want a burger from Tesco? Yay or neigh?

Not entirely sure how Tesco are going to get over this hurdle.

Waitress in Tesco asked if I wanted anything on my Burger. So I had £5 each way!

Had some burgers from Tesco for my tea last night ...
I still have a bit between my teeth.

A woman has been taken into hospital after eating horse meat burgers from Tesco.
Her condition is said to be stable.

Tesco are now testing all their vegetarian burgers for traces of unicorn

"I've just checked the Tesco burgers in my freezer ... AND THEY'RE OFF"

Tesco now forced to deny presence of zebra in burgers, as shoppers confuse barcodes for serving suggestions.

Said to the missus, These Tesco burgers give me the trots....

"To beef or not to beef, that is equestrian".....

A cow walks into a bar.
Barman says, "Why the long face?"
Cow says "Illegal ingredients, coming over here stealing our jobs!"

I hear the smaller version of those Tesco burgers make great horse d'oeuvres.

These Tesco burger jokes are going on a bit....
Talk about flogging a dead horse!

The End???

Just wondering. Are there any known cases of people getting ill from this "scandal". It reminds me of an incident some years ago when some Australian "beef" exported to the US was found to contain kangaroo meat. There was a lot of hoo haa but nobody suffered any ill effects.

Methinks it's a bit of a storm in a teacup, afterall what doesn't kill you is edible.

Don't know but very possible ...

might also sensitize people who might later need horse derived medicines.

The more involvement by businesses, the worse the government gets.

It is supposed to be of "the people". And I think we have made SOME progress to getting it back in recent years, a lot of regress is desired by the tea party. And a lot of regress was accomplished during the Dubya years. Same garbage/different day. Dig in.

Edit: I would LIKE a government that ensures the quality of our food supply. Sadly it does not, and it needs better regulation. Not by those trying to feed us this ...... STUFF.

Shouldn't that have been a Roo-Haa? Ha! ;-)

Of greater concern is that if there is fraud to dump 'other products' such as horse meat in with products that are not horse meat, there is also the high likelihood that anything that can be passed off as 'meat-like' from any unsavory source is likely included for cheap...

Including such as condemned meat...

Directly of concern for the horse meat is that some veterinary drugs used on animals are very unhealthy for human consumption... Especially so for old horses...
