For the last time. Just ordered a meat grinder. I will miss some tasty fast food but I have got to draw the line somewhere. And re-packaging dogfood(beef by-products) cartilidge, veins, and what-not and calling it "beef" is just going too far. I am sure when the smoke clears they will have a new angle.

Now if I can figure out how to avoid Shmeat, GMO's, BGH, .... where oh where do the next lies come from? And we wonder why other countries refuse to allow U.S. "beef" in???

Businesses worst enemy: themselves. Be honest. If it was really a great product, they would not have to try and hide it. Which they managed for a very long time.

the name was coined on an internal memo made public via the freedom of information act. It is a more accurate name than "lean finely textured beef". But either way, if it is a good product sell it as such. Do not blame the light brought to the lies.

"chicken paws" are indeed a dim sum delicacy. And honestly packaged. Bologna/hot dogs you expect some not so good parts in.

But I was foolish enough to believe ground beef was beef that was ground, not someones floor trash repackaged.

Yea, "lean... beef" is NOT an acceptable name. At the very least it needs to be referred to as "Highly Processed Beef Product"

Whether or not people want to eat it is up to them. But I would have hoped it would be law to list this product in the ingredients of any product containing it.

Beef from all its ground meat products in all Save Mart, Lucky, S-Mart Foods, FoodMaxx, and
Maxx Value Foods stores.
Though Lean Finely Trimmed Beef is known to be a safe process endorsed by the USDA, we
want to be responsive to increasing consumer concerns. Until all our ground beef can be
produced without LFTB, concerned customers can select ground beef from Organic Prairie,
Harris Ranch, or Laura’s which contains no lean finely trimmed beef. Current ground beef
products in our stores with LFTB have never been produced with ammonium hydroxide.
The stores of Save Mart Supermarkets are committed to providing high quality meat products
that are both nutritious and delicious. Our meat specialists are always available to answer
consumer questions on quality, preparation, and proper selection.

Translation: Yes we use something similar, and we will continue to do so when we figure out another way to hide it. Until their ground beef can be produced without it?!? really? Is this part of an ancient method somehow REQUIRED to make ground beef?!?

In the mean time, you can pay extra for these other products.

A really sad response from Savemart.

I liked costco's. "We do not use it, because we can not figure out how to explain it to consumers. We never added it."

I will eat go that I know what is in it. Until recently I ate Jack in the box tacos.. I long suspected they were not actual meat.. But I was thinking beans, maybe soy extender. I had no clue they were slip sliding in slime!!

I had two of those for the first and only time--true dog food--a most vile and tasteless concoction. My first taco bell about ten years ago also told me that they were serving dog food and not 100% beef.

Be careful in Belgium if you order steak. Unless you specify BEEF steak you will get served horse meat. I know, because it happened to me, ugh .....



That is one thing in Mexico you never have to worry about. Horse meat is much more expensive.

March 28 (Reuters) - CME live cattle futures fell early
Wednesday, reversed Tuesday's steep rise, amid worries that the
uproar about ammonia-treated ground beef known as "pink slime"
would keep dragging down wholesale beef prices.
* A Tyson Foods Inc executive said Tuesday that the
controversy over what the industry calls "finely textured beef"
has hurt demand for U.S. ground beef. [ID:nL2E8QR3EL
* Also weighing on cattle futures was uncertainty about this
week's cash cattle prices given extremely negative beef packer
margins.
* Hog futures traded lower with the decline in cash hog
prices.

LIVE CATTLE - At 8:45 a.m. CDT (1445 GMT), April down
0.600 cent per lb at 125.000 cents and June down 0.575
cent at 121.400 cents.
* "I guess what we saw yesterday was a dead-cat bounce with
the deal about "pink slime" later pulling down the boxers
(wholesale price)," an analyst said.
* USDA Tuesday afternoon estimated the average price for
choice beef at wholesale at $185.44 per cwt, down $1.31. Select
cuts dropped $1.18 to $185.38 with a total sales volume of 197
carloads.
* Feedlots in Texas and Kansas priced their cattle at $128
per cwt.
* Packers are expected cut bids for cattle based on
Tuesday's margins that was at a negative $75.90 per head,
compared with a negative $38.24 a week ago, according to
HedgersEdge.com.

FEEDER CATTLE - March down 0.125 cent at 153.700
cents per lb and April down 0.350 cent at 153.675 cents.

* Futures traded weaker with lower live cattle contracts.

LEAN HOGS - April down 0.225 cent per lb at 84.575
cents and June down 0.575 cents at 93.150 cents.
* Packers trimmed slaughter rates and cash prices to bring
their margins back in line.
* The government's estimate for the average price of hogs at
the benchmark Iowa/southern Minnesota market Tuesday evening
was 73 cents per cwt lower at $81.31.
* Pork packer margins for Tuesday was estimated at a
negative $7.55 per head, compared with a negative $4.21 last
week.

Now then.. this is counter-intuitive to the meat industry, but not to consumers.
After this fiasco, people are staying away from production grade meats. So the prices per pound fall. The meat industry was scrambling trying to figure out how to replace the pink slime. No need, put more meat in it. Real meat.

Only if and when confidence is restored in the USDA programs and procedures will there be a need to replace what was "lost".

Again, a bit of honesty in what they try to feed us would go a long way to restoring consumer confidence. They had some great financial quarters at the expense of long term profits. This is what happens when sociopaths run rampant.

As repetitive as it might be, those who continue to pronounce the quality of the
"Lean Finely Textured Beef"(Pink Slime) should market it AS IS. If the consumers want it they are free to continue buying it.

Just label it so the rest of us do not have to.

Side note: This product does not meet the standards of ALPO dog food.

I had never heard of slime until a few weeks ago when my wife told me. Seems wally world is a big believer in selling that crap. All though I have read that they will stop doing it. I buy slime free now. Yuck, What the hell is the USDA thinking?

savemart(foodmax) is also slow in response. Their initial reaction was to point people to premium products.

I presume it is through their entire store brand canned foods as well.

My new Waring meat grinder arrived. It will be a pain to use, but at least I can have some food I can trust. Lots else not to trust, where else are equally disgusting measures in our food chain, or coming it? I am not quite slow enough to believe the people who brought us pink slime are going to give up and go away.

So.. what have they done to the dairy products to make some cheeses taste so bad? (store brands come to mind).

"we will stop" is a slap in the face. That means they will continue until they run out of current supply. And if they are going to do that, expect it in other foods (indirectly?) rather than disappearing.

3 out of 4 factories shut down is a good start. 4 permanent would be real progress.
