This problem is one that government brought about on itself with help from the taxman. It started back in the early 90's with the taxman wanting to get full NI and tax from self-employed people like designers and techical publications people. With the ruling that if you worked for only one company in a year then that company should take you on as a full time employee. The companies, which included goverment departments like the NHS, MOD and transport department, didn't like it as they either would end up with these people that they didn't need for long periods and therefore could end up forking out redundancy payments, or trying to sack them just because the specific job had been finished. I got caught up working for the MOD on contract, for a job that was programmed initially for 16 months, but had a clause in it to extend until the project was complete. The MOD didn't want to take us on full time as it was a one off contract. In the end with lots of talks between legal people for all sides the present day agreement came into place, allowing small companies, one man bands, to work on time limited contracts. These usually are less than two years, and therefore, through this loophole, allows people to be employed at one grade and the next contract at the next grade up. And although it might seem that they are paid more that a full time employee, they will not be eligible for pensions, health cover etc. and will have to employ an accountant. The problem was, of course, made worse by downsizing, where some essential personnel were made redundant. In one case I know of, a department was closed, the bosses thinking they could buy the services, as required, from outside sources. All the members of that department were effectively working for other companies within days of leaving, usually with golden handshakes or very good relocation costs. That decision probably cost the company and the goverment department over £10M in the next few years alone. They eventually got two of the (older) people back, but under contract, as they did not want the complication of employing them and paying them pensions at the same time. |

Another of Del-boy's "Big Society" ideas in tatters.... Elected Mayors in all big cities being rejected So what other beaurocratic B/S coming our way next? A tax increase on toilet tissue? If so, with all the crap they spew out, the deficit would be cleared up in no time at all! |

Hmmn, Blondie got a second term & promised to "fight for good deals for Londoners"....really, you still haven't made good your promise to get rid of bendy buses! So what can they expect now? As for "Nancy Boy" Cleggie, gets a rollicking from one of his seniors.... & As for Del-boy, doesn't look a happy chappie......looks like I'll have to rename him as he's looking more & more like "Billy Bunter"......who imo was the best conservative ever....storing all that fat to keep him warm! Cheer up boys Think they ought to go back to basics, so here's a "new" conservative anthem for the party.....might restore their happiness.... Vera Lynn OR Ken Dodd |

Personally, I think that perhaps this thread should be called, Camerons first and only term! Can anyone seriously see this bunch of clowns getting back into government at the next election? Frankly, this is the most incompetent and inept government that I can remember - elsewhere, I said about six months ago, that this government could very well prove to be, one that makes Gordon Brown's government look pretty good! Thats quite an achievement!!! Maybe it is just my 'military eye', but isn't Cameron, out of step in the photo below? That, just about sums it up. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

Nope, not an "ardent" anything. However, it would be nice to actually see some upfront, straight talking politicians (ones that actually carry out their manifestos) for a change - you never know, they just might dumbfound ALL voters! |

It's been said that I'm more of a "wham bang, thank you ma'am" type of person. Personally I disagree but there are times when the direct approach has it's place in exactly the same way as diplomacy. Let's look at where diplomacy has got us.... ...heading into the biggest recession since pre-wwII days. With most voters not trusting either of the main parties, gave a coalition a chance... & what do we get? a bunch of schoolboys arguing amongst themselves over their policies, with many ministers talking to themselves as if the electorate does not exist. The current coalition are well aware that there is not a lot they can do, hence the change to a 5 year term of office - thereby guaranteeing them their place at the trough. Should a politician with the balls to take a direct approach will guarantee his/her party at least 10 years in office..... ..the scoolboy comment from someone who stated "bring back maggie"? Thanks for the laugh, but if there is another like her out there, then he/she better step up to the plate PDQ! It won't be a case of politics needs it, the country does! |

OMG! I'll never moan at Guardianistas ever again........:) Del-boys & Rodney's live on another planet "Worse, they're salesmen selling things they don't actually have and will never be able to deliver. Or like actors, in a play; very well-paid actors too". |
