Hi,

I just signed up today 03/14/12, is there not work currently, or something is not setup correctly. I've also taken up Milkyway project and it's running fine.

Need some info..

Thanks,

Mike

There is work, it's just hiding behind a clogged up pipe, as each Tuesday this project goes down for several hours to do maintenance, and upon its return thousands of computers will try to report work done and download new work. Since the project only has a 100Mbit line for in & out, you can imagine that it won't be able to serve all at the same time.

By Friday this congestion usually tapers off. So just have patience.

You have at least 11 workunits now. There are also abandoned workunits from an hour earlier; did you uninstall or reset the project?

I am having the same issue/problem. I reapplied SETI@home to my new computer "Tuesday the 20th of May 2012" Did 2 work units, (saw the nifty colored graphs so I assume it was working). Left my comp on all night to finish a WU and start the next... But, awoke to this message: "SETI@home. work done by Wemakemud, (me), 0,00" with no downloading or work in progress status.
*Will SETI automatically start new WUs?
*Is this a result of that "bottle-neck" issue?
*Or is this an operator error issue on my part?

Any info/help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We all have the problem at this time that we aren't getting work. Something broke at the project and we'll have to wait until someone gets into the office. It's only 8:53 in the morning over there, people are only now arriving in the office. The project isn't manned 24/7, as they don't have the man-power nor the money for that.

So patience it is, or add other projects to BOINC to do some other science and fill in the waiting gap.

Just signed up, as well, and am glad to have run across this, since it's Tuesday and I'm showing a continuing state of "downloading" in my Task manager. I'll just wait till things clear up.

I cannot believe the project server for seti is running on 100base! Wow.

Seems like someone should donate some network equipment to those guys.

They're not running 100base; their internet connection is 100Mbit. Internally their network is Gigabit or faster.

It is the last couple of miles that are only 100Mb/s. This cable is owned by UCB and the question is who pays to upgrade it to 1Gb/s cable.

Hopefully the go with cat6, and not 5e, or else we'll be running into this issue again in a decade or less.. :-)

What is needed is Fiber Optic.

Isn't that more for server cabinet to server cabinet setup. Or are you referring to Fiber based internet access? We all would love that. :-)

The entire internet backbone runs on fibre optic. If SETI could connect directly into the backbone, that would surely alleviate most of the congestion.

Yea that would be nice. I thought the major universities were the foundation of "the fiber optic backbone" of the internet. It seems funny to me to have a university project with limited bandwidth tying it to the internet.

Berkeley does have access to the backbone of the internet, but their labs aren't allowed to use it for unapproved purposes, and I'm sure if any single project at Berkeley (remember, there's probably hundreds of them) used up a significant portion of their bandwidth like SETI@Home likely would, I'm sure they would be shut down or made to pay a large sum for usage.

In fact, SETI@Home's third-party ISP actually offers 1Gb access to the internet, but the cables must be approved by the Regents of Berkeley to be run from building to building. The current cables and switches are limited to 100Mbit speeds, and Eric has been working the Regents delicately to get that changed.

Of course, those kind of politics take time, and Dr. Eric Korpela has already been working on getting the full 1Gbit access for over 6 months now. Patience is all that is required on our end, as it may take another 6 months or longer.

The problem is the last mile up the hill. There are two network cables running up the hill to the Space Science Lab. A 100 Mb line for SETI, and a 100Mb line for everyone else. The problem is replacing this line with a higher speed one.
